The Targaryens pay such a devastating price that the war is ultimately a victory without a true winner.
That answer depends on what “wins” means: defeating the rival, receiving official recognition, passing the throne to a claimant’s descendants, or preserving the power of House Targaryen. Each measure produces a different result.
Key takeaways
- Aegon II wins the personal contest: he outlasts Rhaenyra, captures her on Dragonstone, and remains the recognized king during the war’s final settlement.
- Rhaenyra’s faction wins the dynastic succession: her son Aegon III succeeds Aegon II, and the later Targaryen royal line continues through her descendants.
- Rhaenyra does not become the uncontested official queen: later royal chronology counts Aegon II as king and does not generally count Rhaenyra as a reigning queen.
- The Dance of the Dragons takes place from 129 to 131 AC as a civil war between the Targaryene-aligned Blacks and Greens, not as a foreign invasion.
- The Targaryen dynasty loses its greatest strategic advantage: the war kills many dragons, dragonriders, and members of the royal family, and the surviving dragons decline afterward.
Who wins the Dance of the Dragons?
The Blacks win the Dance of the Dragons in dynastic terms, but Aegon II wins the immediate personal contest: he defeats and outlives Rhaenyra, while her son Aegon III inherits the Iron Throne after Aegon II’s death. The Targaryens as a dynasty pay such a devastating price that the war is ultimately a victory without a true winner.
That answer separates four outcomes that are often collapsed into one. Aegon II defeats his rival personally. Aegon II is retained in the official royal succession. Rhaenyra’s descendants inherit the throne. Neither faction achieves a clean version of its original political objective.

What was the Dance of the Dragons?
The Dance of the Dragons was a Targaryen succession war fought from 129 to 131 AC between Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and her younger half-brother, Aegon II. The Greens crowned Aegon after the death of their father, King Viserys I, while the Blacks supported Rhaenyra’s claim. The conflict was a civil war within House Targaryen and the realm it ruled.
The dispute had no universally accepted rule that settled the question in advance. Viserys had publicly designated Rhaenyra as his heir, giving the Blacks a direct statement of royal intent. The Greens relied on the stronger traditional preference for a male claimant over an elder daughter. The two factions therefore presented competing ideas of legitimacy rather than simply arguing over whether one claimant had any legal basis at all. A detailed account of the Dance’s succession dispute records both foundations of the conflict.
| Question being asked | Winner or outcome | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Who defeats the rival claimant? | Aegon II | Rhaenyra is captured and killed by Aegon II’s dragon, Sunfyre. |
| Who is counted as the reigning monarch? | Aegon II | Later official succession treats Aegon II as king; Rhaenyra is not generally listed as Queen Regnant. |
| Whose descendants inherit the throne? | Rhaenyra’s line | Her son Aegon III succeeds Aegon II, followed later by her other surviving son, Viserys II. |
| Which faction gets everything it wanted? | Neither | Rhaenyra never secures an uncontested reign, while Aegon II’s direct line fails. |
| Who benefits from the war overall? | No one decisively | The royal family, realm, and dragons are severely weakened. |
How does Aegon II win the personal war?
Aegon II wins the narrowest and most literal interpretation of the Dance because Rhaenyra never defeats him permanently. Rhaenyra briefly takes King’s Landing, but her occupation does not produce a stable or lasting reign. After further reversals, she is captured on Dragonstone and killed by Sunfyre, Aegon II’s dragon. Aegon II therefore survives his principal rival and remains the recognized king during the final phase of the conflict. The account of Aegon II’s reign and conflict with Rhaenyra supports this personal-war reading.
That result makes it inaccurate to describe Aegon II as merely a defeated usurper. Aegon’s claim remains contested, but he is not erased from the later king list simply because Rhaenyra occupied the capital for a time. The postwar settlement preserves Aegon II’s place as king, partly because formally reopening the succession dispute would create another threat to the monarchy.

Why do the Blacks win the dynastic succession?
The Blacks win the dynastic succession because Aegon II dies without a surviving male heir and is followed by Aegon the Younger, Rhaenyra’s son by Daemon Targaryen. Aegon III becomes the seventh Targaryen king, and Rhaenyra’s other surviving son, Viserys II, later also occupies the Iron Throne. The continuing royal line consequently comes through Rhaenyra rather than Aegon II’s direct descendants. Aegon III’s succession and position in the Targaryen line explain why the Blacks can claim a dynastic victory.
The qualification is essential: Aegon III inherits after Rhaenyra has been killed. Rhaenyra’s son achieves the outcome for which she fought, but Rhaenyra herself does not defeat Aegon II, rule uncontested after him, or become securely recognized in the later official chronology. “The Blacks won” is therefore accurate when it describes the line that inherits the throne, not when it claims that Rhaenyra personally won her reign.
Was Rhaenyra officially recognized as queen?
Rhaenyra’s supporters treat her as the rightful queen, but later royal succession generally counts Aegon II as king and does not place Rhaenyra in the standard sequence of reigning monarchs. The distinction between political legitimacy and official chronology is one reason the Dance has no simple winner.
Rhaenyra’s brief control of King’s Landing cannot be treated as proof that she ultimately defeated Aegon II. Her claim remains central to the dynastic outcome, yet the postwar record gives Aegon II the official regnal number and gives Aegon III the next successful reign. The surviving account of Rhaenyra’s claim and legacy shows why her historical position is more complicated than either “rightful queen who won” or “claimant who accomplished nothing.”

Why does neither side truly win?
Neither side truly wins because the Dance destroys the power that made the Targaryen monarchy formidable: its dragons. The war kills dragons, dragonriders, nobles, and members of the royal family, while the surviving dragons decline during Aegon III’s reign. Aegon III’s later epithet, “the Dragonbane,” is associated with the disappearance of the dragons, although the in-world history does not reduce that disappearance to a simple claim that Aegon III personally killed them. The specialist history of the Dance details the war’s cost to House Targaryen and its dragons.
Aegon II’s personal victory is consequently pyrrhic. He defeats Rhaenyra, but his children and immediate line fail to secure the succession, and he dies soon after the war’s decisive phase. The Blacks gain the throne through Aegon III, but Rhaenyra is dead, several of her children are dead or missing, and the Targaryen state is more divided and vulnerable than it was under Viserys I.
What is the difference between the book ending and the television ending?
The completed literary account and the television adaptation should be discussed separately. The book-canon outcome described above comes primarily from George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which the publisher identifies as the source material and inspiration for House of the Dragon and as a chronicle of the Targaryen civil war that nearly destroyed the dynasty. The publisher’s description of Fire & Blood provides the relevant source context.
The television series can change emphasis, chronology, characterization, or the presentation of disputed historical events. According to official Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO Max materials supplied for this article, season 3 is an eight-episode season based on Fire & Blood, with a June 21, 2026 debut and weekly episodes on HBO and HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s season-three announcement and HBO Max’s official schedule information identify the adaptation’s distribution details.

Unless a relevant episode has been directly verified, the final television outcome should not be presented as already identical to the completed book account. The analytical framework remains useful for both versions: ask who wins the personal confrontation, who receives official recognition, whose descendants inherit, and what the war destroys.
Read the source behind the adaptation
Readers who want the full historical account can explore George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the book House of the Dragon is based on. The book is the source for the Dance’s competing accounts and later succession; it does not mean that Rhaenyra personally defeats Aegon II.
How should the answer be stated?
The most precise short answer is: Aegon II wins the duel, Rhaenyra’s descendants win the dynasty, and the Targaryens lose the Dance. Aegon II defeats Rhaenyra and remains the recognized king. Rhaenyra’s son succeeds him and preserves her line on the Iron Throne. The war’s destruction of the dragons and the royal family prevents either faction from claiming an uncomplicated victory.
Frequently Asked Questions

Why do people say the Blacks won?
The Blacks win the succession because Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III inherits the Iron Throne after Aegon II, and Rhaenyra’s other surviving son, Viserys II, later also becomes king.
Why is the Dance of the Dragons considered a pyrrhic victory?
The Dance weakens both factions by killing members of the royal family, dragonriders, nobles, and many dragons. The surviving dragons decline during Aegon III’s reign, leaving the Targaryen dynasty less powerful.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Blacks win the Dance of the Dragons only if “winning” means determining the later Targaryen succession. Aegon II wins if the question means who defeats the rival claimant and receives official recognition as king. The war’s broader result is catastrophic for both factions: Rhaenyra dies, Aegon II’s direct line fails, and the Targaryens lose much of their dragon power.
