The Bluebell Girls were a precision dance troupe founded in Paris by Irish dancer and manager Margaret Kelly, known as “Miss Bluebell.” Its first twelve dancers appeared at the Folies-Bergère on 5 November 1932. The company later became identified with the Lido de Paris and maintained an international presence, including a long-running engagement at the Stardust in Las Vegas.
Behind the polished line, towering heels and elaborate costumes was a demanding working life: rigorous auditions, repeated performances, fast changes, shared accommodation, supervision, travel and homesickness. Former dancers also describe friendship, rivalry and personal choices that varied considerably by era and by venue. There was never one universal Bluebell experience.
How the Bluebell Girls began
Margaret “Miss Bluebell” Kelly and the first troupe
Margaret Kelly had already performed with the Jackson Girls before accepting work at the Folies-Bergère. In 1932 she was contracted to organize and lead a resident troupe for the Paris theatre. The first twelve Bluebell Girls performed in the opening-night programme of Nuits de Folies on 5 November 1932.
Kelly’s distinctive idea was a very tall, carefully aligned ensemble. The Dictionary of Irish Biography records that many recruits were ballet dancers rejected by classical companies because they were considered too tall. In that period Kelly recruited mainly British dancers and used their height to create the long, uniform line that became the troupe’s signature.

From the Folies-Bergère to the Lido
After the Second World War, Kelly re-formed the company for the Folies-Bergère and moved it among Paris venues. In 1948 the troupe began its long association with the Lido de Paris. The Lido’s dinner-show format turned a moving dancefloor into the stage, allowing scenery, performers and audience sightlines to change during the spectacle.
Kelly was not simply a figurehead. She managed and trained dancers, rehearsed them, planned productions and arranged choreography. Her husband, Marcel Leibovici, handled business and financial matters and composed or orchestrated much of the music. Their division of responsibilities helped make the Bluebells an institution rather than a short-lived cast.
International work and Las Vegas
The company’s work extended well beyond Paris. The biographical record describes tours and a Bluebell troupe at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas from 1958 through 1991. An oral-history record held by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas includes former dancer Paulette Morris’s audition for the Folies-Bergère, her costumes and schedule, and her dancing in the Stardust show during the 1960s.
Kelly also drew a firm line around what employment meant. When Stardust management initially expected dancers to mingle with patrons offstage, she threatened to withdraw from the production. She regarded that expectation as facilitating prostitution. The episode matters because it separates the troupe’s deliberately glamorous public image from the assumption that dancers were available for private social access.

Auditions were selective and physical standards were central
The Margaret Kelly collection guide at UNLV describes becoming a Bluebell Girl as requiring a rigorous audition. A newspaper clipping dated 8 October 1956 says Kelly travelled to England to interview aspiring dancers. It reports that dancers were engaged for one year at a time and that the troupe’s women were approximately 5 ft. 8 in. to 5 ft. 10 in. tall.

Height was not the only consideration. Precision revue dancing requires a group to move as one body, so auditions also had to reveal musical timing, stamina, posture, stage presence and the ability to learn choreography quickly. The surviving description does not provide a modern checklist or a single official pass mark; it does show that selection was an organized professional process rather than an informal invitation.
Recruitment routes differed by dancer and decade
Former dancers recall different paths into the company. Annette Hirsch said she was recruited in Australia at 16 for the period 1973–1982. In her words, “J’ai été recrutée à l’âge de 16 ans lors d’un casting organisé chez moi, en Australie.” (“I was recruited at age 16 at an audition organized where I lived, in Australia.”) Jane Adamik, who danced from 1993 to 2008, said she auditioned at 22 after working in other countries.
These accounts do not establish one permanent worldwide casting system. They show that Kelly’s organization could find dancers overseas, while experienced performers could also approach an audition after building an international career.
What the 1956 pay report can—and cannot—tell us
| Item | What the 8 October 1956 clipping reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Engagement | One year at a time | A period account, not proof that every contract used this term |
| Approximate height range | 5 ft. 8 in. to 5 ft. 10 in. | Describes the dancers cited in that article |
| Weekly pay for dancers | About £10 | Newspaper claim for 1956; not a universal historical or current rate |
| Weekly pay for showgirls | About £15 | Newspaper claim for 1956; the clipping does not establish later values |
The figures are useful for understanding what one newspaper told readers in 1956, but they should not be converted into present-day salaries or applied to every Bluebell production.
What did the work onstage involve?
Precision, repetition and speed
A Bluebell performance depended on exact spacing and synchronized movement. The biographical account describes rapid-paced spectacles in which the line of dancers was one element of a much larger machine of music, scenery and lighting. Dancers had to repeat the same patterns accurately while projecting energy to a large audience.

A 2010 retrospective of the Lido’s historical run reports that the revue was performed twice a day, seven days a week. It says a new show was introduced every six months at first and later every year. That is a dated description of an earlier schedule, not a current Lido listing, but it conveys the scale of the commitment: two public performances on every operating day, alongside rehearsals, fittings and preparation.
Costume and set changes were part of the job
The visual effect depended on frequent changes of costume and scenery. Elaborate outfits, high heels and moving scenic elements made the production look effortless while leaving dancers little margin for error. A quick change was a timed technical task: a dancer needed to exit, remove or alter a costume, put on the next one and return on cue without disturbing the ensemble’s formation.
Costumes also shaped the physical demands. Tall heels altered balance and stride, while heavy or restrictive pieces could increase fatigue. The historical descriptions establish that changes were frequent; they do not provide a single standard costume weight, shoe specification or rehearsal-hour total.
Training and management under Kelly
Kelly’s role combined artistic authority with everyday supervision. She trained dancers, rehearsed them and determined how the troupe fitted into each new revue. For a dancer, that meant learning the company’s style and accepting corrections intended to preserve uniformity. Individual visibility existed—some dancers became group captains or appeared in publicity photographs—but the ensemble’s value rested on collective precision.
What was everyday life like away from the stage?
Shared housing, rules and homesickness
Annette Hirsch recalled living in a small studio above the cabaret with other foreign dancers. She described close supervision and strict rules, including not going out at night. Her account also records homesickness: travel and glamorous surroundings did not prevent difficult days far from family and familiar routines.

Hirsch’s story is vivid but personal. It demonstrates what company housing and oversight could feel like for one young overseas recruit; it does not prove that every dancer lived in the same room, followed identical rules or experienced the same degree of isolation.
Friendship and jealousy could coexist
Jane Adamik remembered the atmosphere among dancers as generally good, while also noting jealousy over opportunities such as becoming a group captain or appearing in photographs. Her phrase, “l’ambiance entre filles était bonne, mais la jalousie est une réalité,” means “the atmosphere among the girls was good, but jealousy is a reality.”
That combination is important. A tightly coordinated troupe needed mutual trust, practical help and shared humour, yet it also had a visible hierarchy. Casting choices, featured positions and photographs could affect status. Camaraderie and competition were not opposites; both could shape the same working relationship.
Relationships, age and major life decisions
The dancers were young women working in an environment that combined travel, public attention and strict professional expectations. Hirsch said she left after becoming pregnant. Her decision shows how employment, relationships and family plans could collide with the demands of a touring or resident revue. It should be read as her biography, not as evidence of a rule that applied to every dancer.

| Era or setting | What is documented | What remains individual or uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| 1930s Folies-Bergère | Kelly’s first twelve dancers appeared on 5 November 1932; many recruits were tall ballet dancers, with British dancers prominent. | Daily housing, pay and rehearsal details for the original twelve are not established here. |
| Postwar Paris and the Lido from 1948 | Kelly re-formed the troupe, moved it among venues and built the Lido association; the revue used a moving dancefloor and elaborate changes. | Exact terms varied by production and year. |
| Stardust, Las Vegas, 1958–1991 | A Bluebell troupe operated at the hotel for decades; Morris’s oral-history record covers 1960s work. | Conditions could differ between contracts, casts and years. |
| Later Bluebell careers | Adamik’s 1993–2008 account shows dancers could arrive after work in other countries and experience both friendship and rivalry. | One former dancer cannot represent the entire later troupe. |
Comparing these settings prevents a common mistake: treating “the Bluebell Girls” as if they were one unchanging cast with one lifestyle. A 1930s resident dancer, a 1960s Las Vegas performer and a 2000s Paris dancer entered different labour markets, venues and social environments.

How large and influential was the Bluebell phenomenon?
A 2010 Le Parisien historical feature reported that the Lido welcomed nearly 500,000 spectators per year. It also said Kelly had trained about 10,000 girls. Both numbers are retrospective newspaper figures attributed to Le Parisien in 2010, not current attendance data or an independently verified census of every dancer Kelly trained.
Even with those qualifications, the figures indicate the scale of the audience and the reach of Kelly’s training system. The troupe helped define the visual language of the Paris revue: a tall, synchronized line set against music, colour, extravagant scenery and rapid costume changes.
What the historical record can tell us about life in the troupe
The strongest institutional chronology comes from the Dictionary of Irish Biography, which identifies Kelly’s leadership, the 1932 debut, the postwar rebuilding and the Lido and Las Vegas connections. UNLV’s finding aids preserve the 1956 clipping and catalogue an oral history that places dancers’ auditions, costumes, schedules and Stardust work in a specific period. The Le Parisien interviews add named former dancers’ memories from the 1970s–2000s.
Those records answer different questions. A biography is useful for dates and management structure; a newspaper clipping captures what was reported about one year’s contracts and pay; an oral-history catalogue identifies a testimony but is not the same as hearing every word of the recording; and a former dancer’s interview reveals lived experience without becoming a universal rule.
