How Eric Adams identified Tracey Collins

What is known about Collins’s career
A longtime educator
Adams said Collins had worked in education for more than 30 years and had worked in both New York and New Orleans. His exact wording was: “Tracey was a phenomenal educator for over 30 something years.” That is Adams’s characterization of her career, not an independent performance evaluation.
Chalkbeat described Collins as a veteran educator and former principal. The available reporting does not establish her age, birthplace, education credentials or a complete employment timeline.
Her senior Department of Education role
Collins held a senior position in the New York City Department of Education before retiring in 2024. Chalkbeat examined her calendar during roughly the first eight months after her promotion and found about 40 scheduled meetings and events. It reported that approximately 75% of the reviewed days were empty on that calendar.
Those numbers describe only the calendar records Chalkbeat reviewed. A calendar does not necessarily include every responsibility, conversation or piece of work, so the figures alone do not show that Collins failed to work or establish how much work she performed.

Why her DOE role drew scrutiny
Chalkbeat reported allegations that Collins did not show up for work and described scrutiny involving travel benefits. These were allegations and investigative context, not proven findings established by the reporting cited here.
Adams rejected the suggestion that his relationship with Collins helped her obtain the promotion and defended her professional record. His defense should be understood as his own response to the criticism.
When Collins retired
According to Chalkbeat’s 2024 reporting, Collins’s last day in the senior Department of Education position was November 1, 2024. The report connected her retirement with the scrutiny surrounding her role, but the available material does not establish a formal finding of misconduct.
