Public reporting supports several friendships between Tom Brady and former teammates, especially Rob Gronkowski, as well as a friendship with Peyton Manning that Brady has described publicly. It does not establish eight people he is not close with. Without direct evidence, silence, rivalry or a shared appearance cannot reliably tell us who is outside someone’s private circle.
Which friendships have been publicly described?
Rob Gronkowski
Gronkowski is the clearest example in the available reporting. A 2018 New England Patriots press conference transcript raises the question of whether his connection with Brady extended beyond on-field chemistry. The NFL also has an interview listing explicitly framed around Brady discussing his friendship with Gronkowski. Together, these sources support describing them as friends, though the listing alone does not provide a quote or establish the details of their private relationship. The NFL interview.
Julian Edelman, Brian Hoyer and Wes Welker
A 2023 FOX Sports retrospective interviewed former teammates Gronkowski, Edelman, Hoyer and Welker about their friendships with Brady. That is evidence of friendships discussed in the context of their time together as teammates; it is not a measure of how often they see one another or how close they are today.
Peyton Manning
At Brady’s June 2024 Patriots Hall of Fame ceremony, the Associated Press reported that Brady called Manning one of his best friends. The event also brought Brady together publicly with former teammates and coach Bill Belichick. Brady’s description gives direct support for the Manning friendship; the ceremony reunion, by itself, shows public contact rather than proving private closeness. Why can’t we name eight people Brady isn’t close with?
“Not publicly identified as a friend” is not the same as “isn’t close with.” A claim about private distance needs direct evidence, such as a person’s own statement or reliable reporting that establishes the relationship. The sources available here do not provide that kind of evidence for eight named people.
- A professional rivalry does not establish personal dislike or distance.
- Appearing together at an event establishes contact, not necessarily friendship.
- Not being mentioned in an article about someone’s friends says nothing conclusive about their private relationship.
Those distinctions matter when reading celebrity coverage. A 2023 Us Weekly article about Brady’s inner circle mixes teammate and family context with claims attributed to anonymous sources. Its reported material should not be treated as equivalent to a first-person statement, and anonymous romantic reporting should not be presented as confirmed fact.

Do Brady’s broadcasting relationships identify close friends?
No individual friendship follows from general reporting about workplace relationships. In a February 2025 article, the Associated Press quoted Fox Sports executive Brad Zager speaking broadly about relationships among the broadcast crew; it did not establish Brady’s personal closeness to a particular colleague. Associated Press coverage of Brady’s first Fox season.
The defensible picture is therefore limited but clear: public sources describe friendships with former teammates and Brady has called Manning one of his best friends. They do not support a factual list of eight people he is not close with.
