The change of performer is documented. The reason for it is not: the sources available for this article do not state why the pilot actor was replaced, and no named producer, network, or actor has publicly explained it in those sources.
Who played Nicky in each stage of the show
The character’s casting history is the part that can be stated with confidence. A character listing on Wikipedia records Marlene Lawston as the actor who portrayed Nicky in the pilot, and Sami Gayle as the actor who played her for the remainder of the series. That listing is a general reference, so it is best read as a secondary source for the casting sequence rather than a production record. Blue Bloods characters listing
- Pilot: Marlene Lawston is listed as Nicky.
- Remainder of the series: Sami Gayle is listed as Nicky.
CBS News independently identifies Gayle as the actor who played Nicky. Its interview and report about Gayle, published May 11, 2018, describes her as having played the character through eight seasons up to that point. The piece is about Gayle’s experience on the show, not about the earlier change of performer. CBS News report on Sami Gayle
Who Nicky is in the series
CBS’s official series page describes Nicky as the teenage daughter of Erin Reagan, a New York Assistant District Attorney and single parent. That description confirms the character’s place in the family, and it is the same across the pilot and later seasons. CBS official Blue Bloods series page

Because the character is the same, a change of performer is a recasting of the role. The available sources do not indicate that the character itself was rewritten or re-created as part of the switch.
What is and is not known about the reason
The reason for the change is undocumented in the sources reviewed. The official CBS material confirms the character and Gayle’s role, but it does not explain the pilot casting change. The CBS News coverage from 2018 does not address it either. Those are limits of the available sources, not proof that no explanation exists. Any claim that the recast was caused by scheduling, performance, or a production decision would go beyond what the evidence shows.
