Wolfgang Van Halen is the son of actress Valerie Bertinelli and rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen. He played bass in Van Halen’s later lineup, then built a separate career as the songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer behind Mammoth.
Who is Wolfgang Van Halen?
Wolfgang Van Halen is a musician whose career spans two distinct chapters: performing with his father’s band and writing and recording music under his own project, Mammoth. The Washington Post’s 2021 profile reports that family and friends sometimes call him “Wolfie”; a SiriusXM feature uses “Wolf.” Those are source-specific forms of address, not evidence of one universal preferred name. Read The Washington Post profile.
How is he connected to Valerie Bertinelli and Eddie Van Halen?
He is the only child of Bertinelli, an actress, and Eddie Van Halen, the influential guitarist and co-founder of Van Halen. His parents’ public profiles made the family connection familiar to many readers, but Wolfgang’s own identity is also rooted in his work as a musician and bandleader.
What did he do in Van Halen?
Wolfgang played bass in the band’s later lineup, taking part in its final era alongside his father. The Washington Post’s 2021 account describes how he developed as a musician and joined the group, as well as how Eddie’s illness affected the family. Bertinelli told the paper that Wolfgang put his career on hold to be with his father after the diagnosis. That period is part of his history, but it does not define the scope of his music.

What is Mammoth?
Mammoth is Wolfgang’s own hard-rock project, separate from Van Halen rather than a tribute act. Mammoth’s official biography describes him as a songwriter, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer, with facility on drums, bass, keyboards and guitar. For the debut, the project was billed as Mammoth WVH; the current name is Mammoth. A January 5, 2026 interview with Louder/Classic Rock says the name was shortened after a trademark issue was resolved. Read the January 2026 interview.
The debut: Mammoth WVH
Wolfgang’s self-titled debut album, Mammoth WVH, came out in 2021. Mammoth’s official biography says it reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on three Billboard charts; the biography does not date each individual chart result. The same page says “Distance” received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Song. These are claims from the artist’s official biography, rather than a dated chart-history citation. The album’s release followed a difficult stretch for the family, but its recording predates Eddie’s death. In a GRAMMY.com interview about the next album, Wolfgang said he had finished recording the debut in 2018. That distinction matters: the debut was not written after his father died. Read the GRAMMY.com interview.
Mammoth II and the songs that followed
Wolfgang described Mammoth II as carrying the emotional contrasts and experiences of the years after 2019, telling GRAMMY.com: “All the things that have happened in my life since 2019, you hear on this album.” He also summed up his approach to making music simply: “The song comes first.” The remarks help distinguish the albums: Mammoth WVH was already recorded in 2018, while Mammoth II reflected later events.

The End and the current project
In a January 5, 2026 interview, Louder/Classic Rock discussed Mammoth’s third album, The End, and reported that Wolfgang again sang and played all the instruments on it. That is a dated snapshot of the project’s work; tour schedules and release details can change, so the interview is the relevant point-in-time source rather than a guarantee of current dates.

His family history explains why he first drew attention, and playing in Van Halen is a significant part of his musical background. Mammoth, however, gives him a distinct role: he writes, sings, plays and produces the material. The available account is not simply that a famous guitarist’s son inherited a place in a band; it is that Wolfgang moved from performing within Van Halen to leading a project built around his own songs and musicianship.
