Matt Reeves has described the kind of antagonist he wants, and fans and reporters have built theories around that description. The two most discussed are Hush and the Court of Owls. Neither is confirmed.
The “huge clue” in circulation comes from comments Reeves made in September 2025, not from a recent announcement. Treat it as a description of intent, not a casting reveal.
What Reeves has said about the villain
In a September 2025 interview with Josh Horowitz on the Emmy red carpet, Reeves said that choosing the right villain was the central question in the sequel’s planning. His words, as transcribed by Batman-On-Film on September 18, 2025, were: “picking the right villain that digs into what that does, that goes into his past and his life, that was what drove that discussion. I won’t tell you where we ended up, but we’re super excited about it. And I will say it’s never really been done in a movie before.”
Two things follow from that. First, the antagonist is meant to reach into Bruce Wayne’s past and personal life rather than only threaten Gotham. Second, Reeves said the sequel would push further into Bruce himself, because the first film was “so much about the Batman.” Neither point names a character. The Independent’s September 19, 2025 report confirms that Reeves kept the identity secret, and it lists Hush, Hugo Strange, and Deathstroke as names reporters had raised, not as confirmed roles.

The Hush theory
The most discussed candidate is Hush. ComicBook.com’s October 4, 2025 article argues that Thomas Elliot, the comic-book identity behind Hush, has a childhood relationship with Bruce and could attack him on a personal level. That is the strongest match to Reeves’s “past and life” description.
The article also points to two details from The Batman (2022). In that film, the Riddler’s revelations include a reporter named Edward Elliot, and the word “HUSH” appears on screen. Those details invite interpretation, but the article does not establish that they were meant as a setup for the sequel. The most accurate phrasing is that the clues have fueled a Hush theory, not that Hush is the villain.

The Court of Owls theory
A competing theory, published by ComicBook.com on September 2, 2026, argues that the Court of Owls could be involved. It cites:
- an owl illustration on a Riddler card in The Batman;
- owl-shaped curtains in The Penguin;
- a maze image shared by production designer Luke Hull;
- owl-like masks reported on set.
The same feature acknowledges that the production has not explained some of this imagery and that some of it may be incidental. These are clues as read by reporters and fans. None is an official confirmation of the Court of Owls.

Comparing the two theories
The two theories rest on different kinds of evidence. The table below uses the four questions that matter most when judging any villain theory.
| Question | Hush | Court of Owls |
|---|---|---|
| Personal connection to Bruce Wayne | Yes, per the 2025 ComicBook.com article: Thomas Elliot has a childhood relationship with Bruce. | Not established in the 2026 ComicBook.com feature. |
| Fit with Reeves’s “never really been done in a movie before” | Argued as a fit, because the character can attack Bruce personally. | Not addressed in the cited feature. |
| Directness of the cited clue | An Edward Elliot reporter character and the word “HUSH” in The Batman (2022). Both are open to interpretation. | An owl illustration, owl-shaped curtains, a maze image from Luke Hull, and reported owl-like masks. Several items are described as possibly incidental. |
| Source type | Secondary reporting, ComicBook.com, October 4, 2025. | Secondary reporting, ComicBook.com, September 2, 2026, including on-set reports that are not official. |
Neither theory is supported by a direct statement from Reeves or the studio naming the character. Hush has the clearer link to Bruce’s personal history. The Court of Owls has more visual clues, but most of them need interpretation.

Variety Australia reported on October 6, 2026 that Warner Bros. and DC Studios had temporarily paused production while Reeves stepped away for a family matter. The same report gives the current scheduled release date as February 18, 2028. Both points are recent and can change, so check the studio’s official channels before relying on the date.
