He is Henry Creel, the boy later known at Hawkins Lab as One. The series’ final conflict also involves the Mind Flayer, so the complete answer is broader than Vecna alone.
Who is the villain in Stranger Things?
For the short answer, it is Vecna. Season 4 reveals that Vecna, Henry Creel, and One are three identities of the same person: Henry is his original identity, One is his Hawkins Lab designation, and Vecna is the antagonist name used after his transformation. The Duffer brothers described that connection as a major Season 4 reveal in Netflix Tudum’s interview about the twist.
The answer depends a little on what “villain” means. Vecna is the central named antagonist, especially in Season 4. Across the completed series, the final supernatural threat also includes the Mind Flayer.
Is Vecna the Mind Flayer?
No: the creators discuss Vecna (Henry) and the Mind Flayer as distinct entities, though their relationship is central to the finale. Ross Duffer said Henry ultimately chooses the Mind Flayer’s side. The creators have also left open whether Henry’s original connection to it was his choice or whether he was controlled from the beginning. That uncertainty is deliberate, not a settled explanation of his earliest motives, as described in Netflix Tudum’s finale interview.

So if the question is who the main villain is, say Vecna. If it asks about the full final threat, include the Mind Flayer and Henry’s alignment with it without claiming the show resolves exactly how that connection began.
Why is the villain called Vecna?
The name comes from the children’s use of Dungeons & Dragons and pop culture to make sense of the supernatural events around them. Matt Duffer said the creators developed the monster first, then looked through D&D references for a comparison the children might use; they settled on Vecna. The name is a point of reference, not a claim that Henry is literally the D&D character or that the game explains his origin. Netflix Tudum explains the naming process.

Who defeats Vecna?
Joyce delivers the final blow in the series finale. Ross Duffer said the creators concluded that if anyone was going to defeat Vecna, it had to be Joyce, tying the moment to her fierce care for her family and others. Netflix Tudum’s interview about Joyce’s final blow discusses that choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to watch The First Shadow to understand Vecna?
No. Matt Duffer described the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow as standalone supplementary backstory that offers more insight into Henry’s psychology, not essential viewing for Season 5. It is optional for viewers who want additional context, rather than a prerequisite for following the series’ main story.
