Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have said the answer will come in Season 3, and McKay has ruled out Saruman, the most-discussed theory. Until that episode airs, the character is known only through Amazon’s official description, the Season 2 story, and production details about the eastern land of Rhûn where he operates.
What the show has officially said about the Dark Wizard
Ciarán Hinds plays the Dark Wizard. Amazon’s character description, quoted by TIME, presents him as the second wizard to arrive in Middle-earth: “the mysterious being known as the Stranger is not the only wizard who has come to Middle-earth.” It places him in the “mysterious lands of Rhûn,” describes him as “a dark and powerful wizard, whose origins and intentions are shrouded in secrecy,” and says he commands “a legion of magic-wielding acolytes.”
Those acolytes are the link to the Season 2 storyline. The description identifies the three travelers who sought out the Stranger at the end of Season 1 as members of this group, acting “on the Dark Wizard’s orders.” That is the most concrete connection the official material makes between the two characters so far.
Who he could be: theories and their status
TIME’s September 17, 2024 article, built around the question “Who is the Dark Wizard in The Rings of Power?”, surveyed the candidates fans were debating while noting that his identity and goal were still unexplained through Season 2, Episode 5. The article treated each idea as speculation. The table below updates each one against the 2026 reporting.

| Candidate | Where it came from | Status as of October 8, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Saruman | Discussed in TIME’s 2024 survey as a fan theory | Ruled out. McKay definitively stated the character is not Saruman, according to GamesRadar+ reporting from 2026. |
| One of Tolkien’s Blue Wizards | Discussed in TIME’s 2024 survey as a fan theory | Unconfirmed. No 2026 statement reported either way. |
| Khamûl | Discussed in TIME’s 2024 survey as a fan theory; an Eastern figure linked to the Nazgûl in Tolkien’s background writings | Unconfirmed. No 2026 statement reported either way. |
| An original character | Discussed in TIME’s 2024 survey as a possibility | Unconfirmed. The showrunners have said the identity will be revealed in Season 3. |
Only the Saruman exclusion is a reported 2026 clarification. The other three remain open, and none should be treated as confirmed. When judging any new theory, separate what the showrunners have stated, whether it fits Tolkien’s text and chronology, and whether it is an adaptation choice or fan speculation. A theory can be consistent with Tolkien and still be wrong for this show.
Rhûn on screen
Rhûn is shown as an eastern, barren desert marked by unusual rock formations. McKay described “tortured rock forms in a barren expanse” as imagery the show had not offered before, and said the Stranger’s journey takes viewers into eastern lands that Tolkien adaptations had not previously depicted on screen.
The landscape is therefore best understood as a deliberate change of scene: the Stranger and Nori move away from the Southlands and Harfoot country into terrain that is harsher and more open. Rhûn’s on-screen look is the strongest visual signal that the Dark Wizard’s story is set apart from the rest of the season.
How the landscape was made
McKay said much of the Rhûn material was filmed in the Canary Islands. The Season 2 production design submission from Kristian Milsted, submitted in the 2024 awards cycle, describes the desert world as built through large stage sets and locations on Tenerife. The two accounts are consistent: real locations provided the terrain, and constructed sets filled in the rest.

Milsted’s submission gives the season’s production scale as 110 new sets and 19 enhanced sets. These are totals for all of Season 2, not counts for Rhûn alone, and the document does not break them down by location. Amazon describes the season’s visual approach as a mix of practical and digital effects. The sources do not say which method was used for each Rhûn shot, so readers should not assume a given frame was entirely real or entirely digital.
The riders chasing the Stranger and Nori show the same mix. McKay called them “a biker gang on horses” and said the design process was difficult. He also said, “Every single one of those masks is a digital effect.” Those remarks are his, not Tolkien’s; Tolkien’s text does not describe these riders in this form.

Amazon identifies Prime Video as the series’ exclusive home. For readers who want the source material, Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is the text the series adapts, and the Blue Wizards and Khamûl appear in Tolkien’s wider writings rather than in the show’s own account. Reading it does not confirm or rule out any theory about the Dark Wizard.
What is still unknown
- The Dark Wizard’s name, origin and goal, which the show’s official description keeps secret.
- Whether the reveal will confirm any of the three remaining theories or introduce a new answer.
- Whether the Rhûn sequences will return in later episodes and how much of that land the show will cover.
The reveal is promised for Season 3, which had not aired at the time of writing. Any claim about its contents before then is speculation.
