Her feature-film debut came five years later, as Skylar in Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020).
From Broadway to the screen
Ryder started performing on Broadway, playing Hortensia in Matilda the Musical. In a New Yorker interview published on January 4, 2024, titled “Talia Ryder Says Yes to Adventure,” she recounts that her family moved to New York for the musical. Breakthrough: Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Ryder’s first feature film was Never Rarely Sometimes Always, written and directed by Eliza Hittman. She plays Skylar, the cousin of Autumn, played by Sidney Flanigan. The story follows the two teenagers from rural Pennsylvania to New York City as Autumn seeks medical care.
Focus Features published an interview with Ryder on April 3, 2020, in which she discusses Skylar’s loyalty and protectiveness toward Autumn, and how she and Flanigan built rapport while making the film. The interview also includes Hittman’s account of the film’s core relationship: “The whole movie is about the bond between these two women.” The quote is Hittman’s, given in the Focus Features interview with Ryder.

On working with directors who hold creative control
In the 2024 New Yorker interview, Ryder described her preference for projects where the filmmaker is in charge. Her words: “I like working on movies like that, where the director really has control of the product.” The comment is about the directors she has worked with, and the interview sets it in the context of her broader approach to choosing roles.
Where to start watching
There is no single “best” Ryder performance to recommend. Choose based on what you want from her work:
- For her first major film role: Never Rarely Sometimes Always, a small-scale drama centered on the Skylar and Autumn relationship.
- For her stage background: Matilda the Musical (Broadway, 2015), in the role of Hortensia. This credit is stage work, so it is not available as a film.
- For a larger studio or ensemble production: West Side Story (2021) or Dumb Money (2023), both of which show her working within bigger casts.
- For a more adventurous or genre-leaning pick: Do Revenge (2022) or The Sweet East (2023), among the selected credits listed above.

What the public record does and does not show
The Prime Video biography, Focus Features’ interviews and film page, the Universal Pictures At Home listing, and The New Yorker interview together establish Ryder’s birth details, her Broadway start, her feature debut, and the selected credits in the table above. They do not provide a full, current filmography or a verified list of awards. For any credit not listed here, the most reliable check is the film’s own studio page or a current cast listing.
