Mekai Curtis is an American actor who plays Kanan Stark, the central character in Starz’s Power Book III: Raising Kanan. The series follows Kanan’s younger years; in the original Power, the adult character was played by 50 Cent.
Who does Mekai Curtis play in Raising Kanan?
Curtis portrays Kanan Stark throughout Power Book III: Raising Kanan, the prequel series about the character’s origins. Curtis’s performance is distinct from 50 Cent’s portrayal of adult Kanan in the original Power.
In a June 2026 interview with ABC Audio, Curtis said he chose not to study 50 Cent’s earlier performance closely so he could develop his own interpretation and keep his reactions organic. The choice lets the younger Kanan feel like a character in formation rather than simply an imitation of the older one.
What is the status of Raising Kanan?
ABC Audio reported that the show’s fifth season is its final season, with the season premiering June 12, 2026. The report describes it as the culmination of Curtis’s five-season portrayal. In a June 16, 2026 ABC News interview, Curtis discussed Kanan’s evolution in the final season and 50 Cent’s mentorship on and off screen.
