Who Is Knuckles in Sonic? The Guardian, Rival and Ally

Knuckles is an echidna who guards the Master Emerald on Angel Island. He is also Sonic’s rival and, depending on the story, a fighting friend and reliable ally—not a lasting villain. His serious, straightforward nature can leave him open to deception, while his punches, wall climbing and gliding give him a distinct role in the games.

Who is Knuckles?

SEGA’s Sonic Channel profile describes Knuckles as the guardian of the Master Emerald on floating Angel Island, where he lives alone. It identifies him as the only one able to control the emerald and frames protecting it as his destiny. SEGA’s Sonic Superstars profile similarly calls him the emerald’s guardian and the final descendant of his clan.

Those duties help explain why Knuckles is more than the series’ strong fighter. He is watchful, committed to a specific place and responsibility, and often encounters Sonic because their goals appear to conflict.

Why does Knuckles fight Sonic?

Knuckles’s original rivalry with Sonic grows out of deception. In the story for Sonic 3, the Death Egg falls onto Floating Island after the heroes’ efforts. Eggman wants to restore it and persuades Knuckles that Sonic is the real threat. SEGA’s Sonic Origins Plus manual summarizes Eggman’s tactic: “As a means to a nefarious end, he convinces Knuckles, the somewhat gullible guardian of the Master Emerald, that Sonic is the real villain.”

In Sonic & Knuckles, Knuckles confronts Sonic over the Death Egg. That conflict makes him an opponent in the early games, but it does not define him as a permanent enemy. SEGA’s Sonic Channel profile calls him Sonic’s rival and uses the Japanese phrase “ケンカ友達,” meaning a friend he fights with. The relationship is better understood as rivalry that can give way to cooperation.

What can Knuckles do in the games?

Knuckles’s signature abilities make him play differently from characters who rely primarily on speed. SEGA’s Sonic Superstars profile says: “He can smash enemies with his powerful spiked knuckles, climb up walls, and glide! Though he can be a bit hardheaded at times, he’s an honorable and reliable ally!”

  • Punch: His strength and spiked knuckles let him break through or attack obstacles and enemies in games that support those moves.
  • Climb: He can scale walls, opening routes that other characters may not use.
  • Glide: He can travel through the air after a jump, making gaps and vertical spaces part of his movement options.
  • Dig: SEGA’s Sonic Channel profile also lists digging among his skills.

These are recurring character traits, not a guarantee that every Sonic game gives Knuckles identical controls, routes or moves. Specific mechanics depend on the title.

When did Knuckles first appear?

Knuckles’s introduction is tied to Sonic the Hedgehog 3. SEGA lists the Japanese release date for Sonic 3 as May 27, 1994, and for Sonic & Knuckles as October 18, 1994, on its Sonic Origins Plus page. The Sonic Origins collection combines the two parts as Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The listed dates are Japanese release dates, not a claim about launch timing in every region.

What is Knuckles like?

SEGA’s Japanese Sonic Channel profile characterizes Knuckles as serious and straightforward, with a tendency to be deceived. The English Sonic Superstars profile describes him as sometimes hardheaded but honorable, brave, trustworthy and reliable. These are descriptions from particular official profiles; the wording reflects how those pages present him, rather than a single exhaustive account of every adaptation.

Sonic Channel gives Knuckles’s profile height as 110 cm and weight as 40 kg. These are fictional character specifications published by SEGA, not real-world measurements. The same profile names fruit, especially grapes, as a favorite and strong sunlight as something he dislikes.
