Alan Barinholtz is a real attorney and actor. He plays Judge Alan Rosen in the comedy series Jury Duty, and he is the father of actors Ike and Jon Barinholtz. The judge is a fictional character; Barinholtz is the lawyer who was cast in the role, and his decades of legal work are the reason many viewers search for his background.
Who Alan Barinholtz is
Barinholtz is an attorney first and an actor second, at least by the public record. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2023 that he had practiced law for 40 years. That figure comes from the paper’s reporting and has not been checked against an independent employment record, so it is best read as the newspaper’s account rather than a verified career timeline.
His legal career and where it stood in 2023
In a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, Barinholtz described his life before the show in these words: “Until Jury Duty, I was a semiretired attorney living on a farm in Ohio.” Asked how his life had changed, he said: “Professionally I still practice law, but solely as an arbitrator.”
Two points follow from that. First, he had not left the legal profession when he took the role; he had stepped back from full practice. Second, the arbitrator work he described was his status at the time of that interview. It does not establish what he does professionally in 2026.

Playing Judge Alan Rosen
In Jury Duty, Barinholtz plays the judge presiding over the fictional trial at the center of the series. The character is named Judge Alan Rosen. His legal background helps explain why he was considered for a judicial role, but the show’s courtroom should not be assumed to be legally authentic. None of the sources reviewed for this article make that claim, and the 40 years of practice is not evidence about how the fictional proceedings are staged.
How he was cast
Casting director Susie Farris told the Los Angeles Times that Barinholtz’s name came up through his actor sons. She also said he auditioned at Ike’s Los Angeles home. At the time, according to Farris, Barinholtz was living in Chicago. That is a different location from the Ohio farm he described to Vanity Fair in 2023. The two accounts are not necessarily in conflict, because they may describe different periods, but the sources do not say when he moved between them, so readers should not treat either location as settled for a specific date.
His family connection
Barinholtz is the father of actors Ike Barinholtz and Jon Barinholtz. That relationship is part of the casting story, but the Los Angeles Times reports that Alan auditioned for the role rather than being hired on family connection alone. Do not confuse the father with his sons: Ike and Jon are separate working actors with their own credits.
What is dated and what needs newer confirmation
Most of the detailed information about Barinholtz’s life comes from 2023 reporting. In that interview he said he had moved from Ohio to Los Angeles, that he continued legal work as an arbitrator, and that he hoped to devote more time to acting. Those were plans and conditions as of 2023. They are not confirmation of his current residence, current legal work, or current acting projects.
