Jonathan Majors played Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (released February 17, 2023). He also played He Who Remains in the first season of Loki. Marvel presents these as two versions of the same character, Kang, rather than two unrelated villains, so the short answer to “who is he in the MCU” is both roles.
Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Kang the Conqueror is the main antagonist of Quantumania. Marvel’s official film page lists Kang the Conqueror among the film’s characters and credits Majors in the cast. In the story, Kang is the villain that Ant-Man, Hope, Cassie and Janet face after they are pulled into the Quantum Realm.
Disney’s official feature on the film describes this Kang as a variant of He Who Remains. It is a different and more volatile version of the character, with ambitions that reach beyond the Quantum Realm. Majors himself described the role in Disney’s feature: “Kang is a time-traveling super villain who is also a nexus being.”
He Who Remains in Loki Season 1
He Who Remains is the figure Loki and Sylvie meet at the Citadel at the End of Time in the Season 1 finale of Loki. Marvel’s account of that finale identifies Majors as the actor playing him. In the same account, Kang is the variant that He Who Remains fears, and the figure he warned the two of them about.

The two portrayals share one actor and one lineage, but they are not identical performances in identical circumstances. The table below separates what the sources establish for each.

In practical terms, if a viewer asks whether Majors plays “Kang or He Who Remains,” the accurate answer is that he plays both, as two distinct variants. Watching Loki first gives the setup for the variant idea, and Quantumania shows the version that becomes the film’s villain.

What producers and the actor have said
Broussard, speaking in a D23 interview, summarised the setup this way: “There are multiple versions of him. You may not necessarily know which version you’re going to get.” That statement is attributed to the producer and refers to the 2023 film. It is the best available guide to how Marvel framed the variants at the time.
Majors’s status after 2023
An AP report from December 2023 said that Disney and Marvel had dropped Majors from future projects following his conviction. That is a dated report. It does not establish a current studio plan for the character as of October 2026, and no later official announcement about Kang’s casting was identified in the evidence used for this article.

- Quantumania is available on Blu-ray and digital, according to Marvel’s film page, which is the most direct way to see Majors as Kang.
- Disney+ lists the film. Availability varies by country and subscription tier, so check the service in your region before assuming access.
- Loki Season 1 is the source for He Who Remains. Confirm which platform carries the series in your region before you start.
Reading the variant idea without the confusion
The MCU uses “variant” to mean that the same lineage of a character can appear in different forms, with different temperaments and different goals. Majors’s two roles are the clearest example of that. The name Kang is the umbrella under which the variants sit, and He Who Remains is one of them as introduced in Loki.
For documentary readers interested in how studios build a character across several productions, this case is a useful one. The same actor carries two versions of a single lineage, and the official sources describe how the connection was built on screen.
