John Malkovich filmed scenes as Ivan Kragoff, the Red Ghost, in Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Director Matt Shakman confirmed that the role was cut, so Malkovich does not appear as Red Ghost in the released film.
Who was John Malkovich supposed to play?
Malkovich played Ivan Kragoff, a Fantastic Four villain known as the Red Ghost. His filmed material belonged to an early sequence in which the team battled Red Ghost and his Super-Apes, according to Variety.
A teaser briefly showed Malkovich in character before reports of the role’s removal. That glimpse was not an indication that his scenes remained in the finished movie.
Why was the Red Ghost sequence cut?
Director Matt Shakman said the film had to balance its retro-futuristic setting, introductions to its central characters and villains, and the introduction of Reed and Sue’s child. He explained that material was removed as the film took shape, telling Variety, “There were a lot of things that ultimately ended up hitting the cutting room floor.”
