Johanna Constantine is an occult detective in Netflix’s The Sandman, played by Jenna Coleman. Coleman also plays Lady Johanna, an eighteenth-century ancestor of John Constantine. The series uses the contemporary Johanna in a role that John fills in the comic’s search for Morpheus’s missing pouch of sand—but this is an adaptation choice, not a scene-for-scene transfer or a simple one-for-one gender swap.
Who is Johanna Constantine?
In the Netflix series, contemporary Johanna is a sardonic occult detective haunted by her own demons. After Morpheus escapes captivity, he seeks her help to locate one of the powerful items he needs. Jenna Coleman plays this modern character as well as her historical ancestor, Lady Johanna.

Neil Gaiman’s official casting announcement describes Lady Johanna as an eighteenth-century occult adventuress and John Constantine’s great-great-great-grandmother. Gaiman said he created her to fill a role John occupies in the story’s past. Netflix’s announcement explains the family connection and the adaptation decision.
How do Lady Johanna and contemporary Johanna differ?
They are two characters from different periods, both played by Coleman. Lady Johanna is the historical figure; contemporary Johanna is the occult detective who encounters Morpheus. Coleman has described their temperaments differently: she called Lady Johanna “a lot more cold and calculated,” while describing contemporary Johanna as carrying the weight of loss and death and having “a much bigger heart.” These are Coleman’s character interpretations, not a universal rule about how the characters must be read. DC’s feature on the adaptation reproduces her remarks.

Why is Johanna in the series instead of John Constantine?
In the comic, John Constantine accompanies Morpheus in the search for the missing pouch of sand. Netflix’s series gives the corresponding contemporary role to Johanna, while retaining Lady Johanna in the historical storyline. The change lets the adaptation use Gaiman’s existing historical character and introduce a present-day version as well. Gaiman said the contemporary Johanna made the script “sparkier, feistier, and in some ways even more fun.”
| Version | Period and identity | Connection to Morpheus’s search | Characterization |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comic | John Constantine is the contemporary character; Lady Johanna appears in the past-set material. | John accompanies Morpheus as he searches for the missing pouch of sand. | Not stated in the cited adaptation sources. |
| Netflix series | Jenna Coleman plays contemporary Johanna and historical Lady Johanna, John’s great-great-great-grandmother. | Contemporary Johanna helps Morpheus find a sought-after item; Lady Johanna remains in the historical story. | Coleman describes Lady Johanna as colder and more calculated, and contemporary Johanna as having a bigger heart. |
DC called the comic-to-screen change an inspired character swap, but that shorthand should not obscure what the series actually does: it combines an existing historical character with a new contemporary role. In a 2022 article, DC also noted other John Constantine projects were then in development; that is historical production context, not an update on their present status.

Is The Sandman series the same as the comics?
No. Netflix says season one largely combines the first two collected books, Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll’s House, and that the creators made significant narrative changes with Gaiman’s approval. Johanna’s expanded presence is one such adaptation choice, not evidence that the show reproduces every comic plot beat unchanged. Netflix’s adaptation guide describes the season’s relationship to those books.

For the comic context behind Morpheus’s search, start with The Sandman: Preludes & Nocturnes, the opening collected volume. It is source material for the broader story, not a Johanna-only biography. Netflix describes the complete comic series as ten books published between 1989 and 1996, and identifies Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll’s House as the first two collections used as the main basis for season one. Netflix’s cast guide gives the publication-span context.
