The Old Guard’s immortals heal from otherwise fatal injuries, but they are not invulnerable—and their condition can end. The films show how the group finds new immortals and how centuries of survival shape its members, while leaving the ultimate cause of immortality unexplained.
How does immortality work in The Old Guard?
The films depict immortality as a capacity to recover from wounds that would ordinarily be fatal. It is not a guarantee of endless life, nor does it prevent pain or captivity. Greg Rucka, creator and writer of the source comic, put the central uncertainty plainly in an Image Comics interview: “The thing is, all of the immortals in the series can die…but they don’t know when, nor how.”

The group’s shared dreams are a signal associated with another immortal. When Nile becomes immortal, the connection helps Andy locate her. The films establish this as part of how the story links immortals; they do not lay out a complete system of telepathy or explain every detail of the connection. Netflix’s first-film recap describes the discovery and its consequences.
Can the immortals die?
Yes. Rucka’s statement describes the broad rule: immortals can die, but they do not know when or how. The films show rapid healing, not immunity to every danger. In the first film, Andy’s healing stops, making clear that immortality is a condition that can cease rather than a permanent shield.

Who is Andy?
Andy is Andromache of Scythia, the group’s leader and oldest known member. Netflix’s recap clarifies that “Andy” is short for Andromache, not Andrea, and describes her as having fought for thousands of years. The precise age should not be treated as a fixed figure: Netflix uses “thousands of years,” while creator interviews offer context rather than a single definitive on-screen age.
How does Nile become immortal?
Nile Freeman is a Marine whose throat wound heals after she appears to die. That recovery reveals her as a new immortal. Her shared dreams with the others alert Andy to her existence and help the team find her. Netflix recounts the discovery in its ending explainer; an About Netflix production announcement also describes the premise of a new immortal entering the group’s world.
Rank #2
Who are the other members of Andy’s group?
Joe and Nicky
Joe and Nicky are long-standing members of Andy’s centuries-old core team, as described in Netflix’s recap. Their shared history is part of what makes the group more than a collection of people with the same ability: they have endured together across generations.
Booker
Booker is another original member of the team. After betraying the group in the first film, he is exiled. The ending leaves that rupture unresolved, with his isolation shaping the story’s emotional stakes.

Who is Quynh?
Quynh is Andy’s former immortal companion. She was imprisoned underwater for centuries, unable to escape, and her return brings anger and frustration as well as the pain of having been left behind. Netflix’s sequel coverage frames her return as a source of conflict, not merely a new piece of immortal lore.
What do Discord and Tuah add to the sequel mythology?
Discord
Netflix describes Discord as one of the oldest immortals, with a hostile view of humanity. Her presence expands the story beyond Andy’s established team, but that description alone does not establish a complete account of how immortality began or works.
Rank #4
Tuah
Tuah is an old friend of Andy’s who may help the group understand immortal existence. The sequel’s framing presents him as a possible source of insight, not as someone who has already supplied a definitive explanation.
Netflix introduces both characters in its coverage of The Old Guard 2. The first film’s ending also matters to that setup: Andy has lost her healing, while Booker remains in exile. The sequel brings Quynh back and introduces Discord and Tuah, extending the mythology while keeping its central mystery open.

Does The Old Guard explain where immortality comes from?
No ultimate cause is established in the official film material cited here. The films show what immortality does—healing, survival, shared dreams, and the possibility that healing ends—but do not identify a settled supernatural or biological origin. The sequel’s hints about Tuah and older immortals do not, by themselves, resolve that question.
The comic is the film’s source, but that does not mean every comic detail is automatically film canon. Image Comics’ Rucka interview explains the creator’s broad rule, while the publisher’s comic information identifies the source work. For viewers who want to read it, Simon & Schuster lists The Old Guard: The Immortal Edition Volume 1, a hardcover collecting the first two comic stories; the publisher calls the comic the inspiration for the film.
