Jabba the Hutt’s son in The Mandalorian and Grogu is Rotta—the same character who first appeared as a baby in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In the new film, Rotta is grown up, muscular and played by Jeremy Allen White. Director Jon Favreau says the character gives the story a chance to explore a different father-and-son relationship.
Who is Jabba’s son in The Mandalorian and Grogu?
Rotta is Jabba the Hutt’s son, not a newly created Hutt. Lucasfilm’s official film trivia identifies him as a character introduced in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. As a baby Huttlet, he was nicknamed “Stinky.” David Acord voiced that animated version; Jeremy Allen White performs the grown-up Rotta in the new film.
Rotta’s return is a substantial change in presentation: the infant from the earlier film is now described as a muscled Hutt and framed as a gladiator. The nickname “Stinky” belongs to the earlier version; the new film introduces audiences to an older Rotta with a very different look and role.
Why is Rotta muscular?
The available production accounts explain how the filmmakers developed Rotta’s appearance, but they do not establish a biological reason for his musculature. Lucasfilm’s September 2, 2026 making-of feature describes concept-art iterations followed by an ILM digital model. Lead Modeler Masa Narita said the Hutt Twins served as a starting point: the team aimed to preserve a family resemblance while giving Rotta a distinct silhouette and personality.

- GALACTIC SOUND EFFECTS (BATTERIES INCLUDED): This Mandalorian figure also features battle sound effects when his buttons are pushed
The feature describes Rotta as young, strong and athletic, contrasting him visually with the older, heavier Hutt Twins. It also recounts a design process that included a request from Favreau for a gentler, more approachable expression, followed by a redesign intended to make Rotta’s face feel more Hutt-like. These are creative choices, not an explanation of Hutt physiology.
What does Rotta add to the story?
Favreau has said Rotta’s presence lets the film explore another kind of parent-and-child relationship. In a StarWars.com interview, he describes the central theme as parenthood and talks about Din Djarin’s changing role: protecting Grogu gives way to teaching and preparing him. Rotta and Jabba’s relationship offers a different family dynamic alongside Din and Grogu’s.

The broader plot is set after the Empire’s fall, when scattered Imperial warlords remain a threat. Lucasfilm’s official film page says the New Republic enlists Din and Grogu to help protect what the Rebellion fought for. The Hutt-family element brings Rotta into that post-Empire story rather than treating his return as only a visual joke.
Will viewers need to know The Clone Wars first?
No prior knowledge is required to understand who Rotta is in the new film. The Associated Press reports that Favreau calls him a gladiator and says, “If you don’t know who he is, you’re going to figure it out pretty quick.” The earlier film supplies the character’s origin and nickname, but the new story is presented so newcomers can follow his role.

The 2008 film remains the key reference for anyone who wants to see Rotta’s first appearance: it introduced both Jabba’s son and Ahsoka Tano. The original and current portrayals are easy to distinguish—baby Huttlet “Stinky” in the animated film, grown-up gladiator Rotta in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
