Alex Gibney’s Musk is a 232-minute documentary about Elon Musk’s ascent from Silicon Valley entrepreneur to one of the world’s most influential business and political figures. It combines interviews with people from Musk’s family, companies and public life with archival material and an unusual computer-generated version of Musk himself. The film follows his early technology ventures, Tesla, SpaceX, the takeover of X and his work with DOGE, while Gibney presents the story as an examination of power and its abuse.
Musk did not give Gibney’s team a new interview. Instead, the documentary uses a CGI avatar whose dialogue is assembled from Musk’s earlier interviews and public appearances, with AI-assisted lip synchronization. That device is central to understanding what viewers are seeing: the avatar is not evidence that Musk participated in filming.

Who is featured in the documentary?
The film draws on people who knew Musk personally, worked with him, reported on him or observed his influence from government and technology. Apple TV’s selected cast listing identifies several participants appearing as themselves, while the Associated Press names additional interviewees. The following is a list of prominent named participants, not a complete credits roster.
| Participant | Role or connection | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Justine Musk | Musk’s first wife | Listed by Apple TV and identified by the Associated Press as an interview participant. |
| Ashley St. Clair | Mother of one of Musk’s children | Discusses her relationship with Musk; Apple TV lists her as appearing as herself. |
| Errol Musk | Musk’s father | Interviewed for the film, according to the Associated Press. |
| Martin Eberhard | Tesla co-founder | Appears in the group of people interviewed about Musk’s business history. |
| Kara Swisher | Technology journalist | Listed by Apple TV and the Associated Press. |
| Zoë Schiffer | Journalist | Appears in the film, according to the Associated Press. |
| Sam Harris | Neurologist | Named by the Associated Press as an interview participant. |
| Samantha Power | Former USAID administrator | Included among the film’s interviewees, according to the Associated Press. |
The mix gives Gibney several vantage points rather than a single authorized account. Family testimony can address Musk’s background and private relationships; Eberhard represents an early Tesla connection; journalists provide context on his public image and companies; and Power brings a government perspective to the film’s political material.

Does Elon Musk appear in Musk?
He appears through recordings and a fabricated visual likeness, not through a newly conducted interview. Gibney’s production created a computer-generated avatar modeled on Musk. The avatar speaks words taken from recordings of Musk’s previous interviews and public appearances, and AI was used to synchronize the mouth movements with that audio.
Viewers should therefore distinguish between three things: Musk’s original recorded words, the documentary’s editing of those words, and the newly rendered image that delivers them on screen. The avatar can make it seem as if Musk is responding inside the film, but it does not represent a conversation filmed for Gibney’s project.
Why was there no new interview?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Gibney and producer Jessie Deeter repeatedly tried to persuade Musk to participate. Gibney said Musk publicly called him a “douche,” a response Gibney understood as a refusal. In Gibney’s words, “Which I took as a no.” The filmmakers consequently built Musk’s presence from material he had already released.
This approach also shapes the documentary’s point of view. Musk controls neither a sit-down interview nor a fresh statement responding to the film’s allegations and interpretations. His archived comments remain audible, but their placement and juxtaposition are determined by Gibney’s edit.

Musk is a broad biography and a study of influence. The Associated Press describes a narrative that starts with Musk’s early Silicon Valley years, moves through Tesla and SpaceX, and reaches his acquisition of X and his role with DOGE. The film is not limited to one company or one controversy; it asks how a technology entrepreneur accumulated authority across business, media and government.
Early life and Silicon Valley rise
The documentary addresses Musk’s childhood and the formative stages of his career. Those sections establish the personal and entrepreneurial background that later becomes part of his public mythology. Rather than treating the familiar success story as settled fact, Gibney retells it from multiple angles, using people around Musk to question how that mythology was built and maintained.
Tesla and SpaceX
Tesla and SpaceX are central chapters in the film’s account of Musk’s rise. Their inclusion places him in the history of electric vehicles, commercial spaceflight and venture-backed technology, while the interviews supply perspectives beyond Musk’s own public narrative. Martin Eberhard’s presence is especially relevant to the Tesla portion because he was a company co-founder.
The takeover of X
The film also examines Musk’s purchase of what was formerly Twitter and the changes that followed. AP reporting says it addresses alleged changes to the platform’s recommendation algorithm. Those allegations should be understood as subjects the documentary raises, not as findings independently established by the runtime or by the existence of the film.
Politics and right-wing connections
Musk’s movement into politics is another major thread. The Associated Press reports that the documentary considers his connections to right-wing politics and the expansion of his influence beyond corporate management. Gibney’s film treats those connections as part of the same trajectory as his business career, rather than as an unrelated late development.
DOGE and access to government information
The documentary raises questions about information gathered by DOGE through access to government agencies, according to AP coverage. The wording matters: the film presents questions and implications for viewers to assess. It does not turn every disputed claim about DOGE, agency access or political influence into an established fact.
What is Alex Gibney’s argument?
Gibney has said the project began as an inquiry into “21st century power.” The Venice Biennale programme describes his framing as a retelling of a familiar biography from several angles, with Musk presented as a modern “confidence man.” Gibney’s stated conclusion is not a neutral consensus judgment; it is the documentary’s thesis.
In the director’s description, the film is “a tale of power and its abuse, but shot from a low angle – the angle of Toto, from the wonderful Wizard of Oz.” The reference signals an outsider’s view of a figure who appears larger than life. Family members, former colleagues, reporters and officials are used to lower the camera from Musk’s self-presentation to the consequences of his decisions and the institutions affected by them.
That framing means the documentary should be read as an argument as well as a chronology. It presents evidence and testimony selected to examine power, accountability and image-making. A viewer looking for a conventional corporate biography may find the film more skeptical and politically expansive than a company-by-company history.

The Mill Valley Film Festival lists the documentary’s runtime as 232 minutes, or 3 hours and 52 minutes. The Associated Press describes it as nearly four hours. The festival listing is the precise published figure; it should not be confused with a statistical study or a claim that every release version will have exactly the same running time.
A film of this length has room to move between biography, business history and current politics. It also requires planning if watched in one sitting. Festival screenings, theatrical presentations and later home releases can sometimes differ in presentation or scheduling, so check the listing for the specific version you intend to see.
When and where was it released?
Musk had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2026 and was slated for a theatrical release in fall 2026. The Los Angeles Times reported that HBO acquired the film’s television and streaming rights.

How should viewers interpret the AI-generated Musk?
The avatar is a storytelling and production device, not a new source of testimony. Its spoken material originated in Musk’s prior public communications, while the visual performance was generated for the documentary. The technique lets Gibney place Musk’s own words into scenes structured by the film, but it also means viewers should pay attention to the original context of each excerpt.
- Listen for whether a statement comes from an interview, speech or other public appearance.
- Separate Musk’s original wording from the film’s editing, ordering and visual presentation.
- Do not assume that an avatar exchange represents a real-time question-and-answer session.
- Treat claims about X, politics and DOGE according to the attribution and evidence supplied in the film and accompanying reporting.
The device may be striking, but it does not solve the central absence of Musk’s participation. The documentary remains an account made by Gibney and his interviewees, with Musk represented through an archive that the filmmakers recontextualize.
What should a first-time viewer know?
Expect a critical, wide-angle portrait rather than a narrow Tesla or SpaceX documentary. The film links Musk’s personal history, companies, media platform and political activity into one question: how does concentrated influence operate when one person can shape markets, public debate and government discussions at the same time?

Apple TV’s cast page and AP’s reporting identify prominent contributors; the finished credits may include additional people and archival voices.
In practical terms, the clearest answer to the title is this: Musk features people connected to Musk and a computer-generated representation built from his past recordings. It covers his life and rise through Silicon Valley, Tesla and SpaceX, then follows his influence into X, right-wing politics and DOGE. Gibney’s organizing idea is that this is ultimately a story about modern power and the risks that follow when it is exercised with limited accountability.
