In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Jim Carrey plays both Ivo and Gerald, bringing the two characters together on screen. That differs from the Sonic Adventure 2 game continuity, where Gerald is already dead and appears in flashbacks and recordings.
Who is Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather?
His name is Gerald Robotnik. He is Ivo Robotnik’s grandfather, and the film gives him a direct role in Ivo’s story rather than limiting him to references from the past. Paramount’s official cast listing names Jim Carrey as both Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik.

Why does Gerald seem like a new character?
The difference is the medium’s continuity and presentation. In the game account discussed by director Jeff Fowler, Gerald has died before the story’s events; players encounter him through flashbacks and recordings. The film instead shows Gerald alive and interacting with Ivo. The characters share a name and family relationship, but the movie changes how Gerald fits into the present-day story.
| Version | Gerald’s status | How he appears |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic Adventure 2 game continuity described by Jeff Fowler | Dead before the events being discussed | Flashbacks and recordings |
| Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film | Alive in the film’s story | Interacts directly with Ivo Robotnik |
Fowler described the game-to-film distinction in a ComicBook.com interview published December 20, 2024.

Why did the filmmakers bring Gerald into Ivo’s story?
Fowler said the family angle let the filmmakers explore Robotnik’s side of the story after the earlier films had made family an important part of Sonic’s side. He also saw a chance to make use of Carrey’s double role by having the two Robotniks share scenes. Fowler put it this way: “I feel like it would be a crime against the world if I had Jim Carrey playing two characters and they never shared a scene together. It just felt like a horrible waste of comedic talent. And really that was my pitch to Jim about the whole endeavor: ‘what if we explored family from Robotnik’s side of things?’ We’d done it in the first two films with Sonic, it was such a strong part of that messaging, but we had never asked the question with the villain, with the Robotnik side of things.”
How does Gerald fit into the film’s larger story?
Paramount’s synopsis frames the film around Team Sonic facing Shadow and needing an unexpected alliance to stop him. Gerald’s defining connection in this explanation is personal: he is Ivo’s grandfather, bringing family into the Robotnik side of the story. Paramount’s film page lists the movie as a 2024 release, rated PG, with a 110-minute running time.
