Squid Game Season 2 is at its strongest when it turns Gi-hun’s return into a mission rather than another desperate bid to survive. That change gives familiar games fresh urgency, but the season takes time to reach them—and its renewed cycle of play and violence does not always deepen the critique that made the first season hit so hard. The result is a brutal, haunting continuation that feels more like a forceful remix than a fully new argument.
What is Squid Game Season 2 about?
Three years after winning the first game, Gi-hun gives up going to the United States and re-enters the competition with a new resolution: to find and stop the people behind it. New contestants, competing for a prize of 45.6 billion won, are drawn into the same lethal bargain. Netflix’s official season guide describes the setup as Gi-hun’s return to the survival game.
That altered purpose is the sequel’s defining choice. Gi-hun is no longer simply a desperate player reacting to danger; he comes back carrying what he has seen and determined to interfere with the system. In a November 2024 Netflix interview, Lee Jung-jae said, “The way you see Gi-hun in Season 1 and the state that you see him in Season 2 are very different.” Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk described something in the character as having “just been broken.” Those comments capture the season’s central tension: Gi-hun wants to act, but the game is built to make action costly.
Does the new mission make the familiar games feel fresh?
A setup that takes its time
The season has seven episodes, compared with Season 1’s nine. The shorter run does not immediately mean brisker storytelling: TIME’s Judy Berman found the opening two episodes plodding, while TheWrap’s William Goodman felt the season made effective use of its shorter length. That split reflects the central pacing trade-off. The time spent outside the contest establishes Gi-hun’s changed outlook and his attempt to pursue the organizers, but it delays the return to the series’ signature arena.

A familiar format with a changed point of view
Once the competition resumes, the child-game/death-game structure remains intact. Its familiarity is both an asset and a limitation. TheWrap saw the old formula made violently new; TIME judged that the cycles of play, murder, and rage repeat without enough variation. Gi-hun’s intervention gives those rounds a different emotional frame, but it cannot by itself make every return to the machinery feel surprising.
What does Season 2 add to the characters and themes?
The changed Gi-hun gives the season a more active source of conflict than simple survival. His resolve puts him at odds with the system and with the Front Man, while the other contestants bring new personal stakes into a competition driven by the same enormous prize. The season’s most compelling question is not merely who can endure another game, but whether anyone can disrupt the rules while trapped inside them.

The show still uses lethal children’s games to expose inequality and greed. CBS describes Squid Game as both a thriller and a social critique; Season 2 keeps that combination, but the critical disagreement is over how much force the critique retains when the contest itself has become a familiar franchise spectacle. TIME argues that the series’ commercialization sits uneasily beside its attack on exploitation. TheWrap, by contrast, found the return haunting and brutal. The new season makes that tension harder to ignore rather than resolving it.
Is the ending satisfying? (Spoiler-light)
The finale is a consequential stopping point, not a neat resolution. Gi-hun’s attempt to intervene is defeated, leaving the conflict and its personal cost hanging over the story. That gives the season a clear reason to continue, but it also means viewers should not expect this installment to settle the larger struggle. Netflix’s ending explainer confirms that the season closes on a failed intervention and a major personal loss; this review avoids naming the loss or detailing the final reveal.
