Silver is a makeup artist. The Associated Press’s December 2025 profile also describes her as a producer. Van Dyke was already a celebrated actor when they met; he later said he learned Silver worked as a makeup artist and hired her.
How did Dick Van Dyke and Arlene Silver meet?
They met backstage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2006, according to Entertainment Tonight’s 2024 interview. A 2012 ABC News report placed their meeting about six years before their wedding, consistent with that date.
Van Dyke recalled that he rarely approached strangers, but when Silver walked by, he introduced himself: “Hi, I’m Dick.” He said he had no idea she was half his age. Silver later described his upbeat nature: “He’s always happy and just positive. Always singing, and I would never sing in public. When did they get married?
Van Dyke and Silver married on February 29, 2012, in a private ceremony near his Malibu home, according to a report based on information from Van Dyke’s publicist. CBS also reported the Leap Day wedding. In March 2012, ABC and CBS described Van Dyke as 86 and Silver as 40; those were their reported ages at the time, not current ages.
How old is Arlene Silver compared with Dick Van Dyke?
Entertainment Tonight reported a 46-year age difference in its July 2024 interview. The historical ages reported around their 2012 wedding offer context for that gap, but should not be mistaken for their ages today.

No. Van Dyke’s first wife was Margie Willett. CBS reported that they had four children together and later divorced.
