Set Windows active hours around your listening time, and schedule any required restart for later. A Windows update restart will stop playback on that PC; to keep listening through the reboot, play the stream independently on another supported device. These steps reduce interruptions without leaving security updates disabled.
Prevent Windows from restarting during your listening hours
Windows may need to restart to finish installing updates. Active hours tell it when you normally use the PC, while restart scheduling lets you choose a more convenient time when Windows offers that option. Neither setting can keep the same PC’s browser playing while Windows reboots. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains these restart controls.
Windows 11: set active hours
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
- Open Active hours and configure the hours you usually use the PC, including your devotional listening time. If your version offers an automatic active-hours setting, you can use that; otherwise set the hours yourself.
- When Windows says a restart is needed, use Schedule the restart if it is offered, and choose a time when you are not listening.
Windows tries to restart when the device is not being used. If it cannot, it may ask you to schedule a more convenient time. Active hours reduce the chance of an automatic restart during the hours you use the PC; they do not prevent every update from requiring a restart.
Windows 10: check the update settings available on your PC
Windows 10’s settings paths and options differ from Windows 11. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and look for active-hours or restart-scheduling controls. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; after that date, its support page says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided. Check Microsoft’s Pause updates in Windows page for that support information and current pause details.

Pause updates only for a short, planned break
If you need to avoid an update during a particular listening period, Windows 11 lets you pause updates temporarily. Open Settings > Windows Update > Pause updates and choose an available end date. The current Windows 11 date picker allows a pause of up to 35 days from the current date. While paused, updates that might require a restart are not downloaded or installed, and Windows will not restart automatically to complete those updates until the pause ends. Updates resume afterward unless you resume sooner.
Pause is a delay, not a permanent way to turn off updates. Resume updates or let the pause expire, then install available updates and schedule any required restart for a time that will not interrupt listening.

Keep listening if the PC must restart
There is no Windows setting that preserves the current browser playback through that PC’s reboot. If the stream must continue during an update restart, start it on a separate supported device that will remain on. YouTube also mentions using another device, Chromecast, or HDMI in its computer streaming and video troubleshooting; those are playback alternatives, not documented guarantees of a seamless handoff during a Windows restart. Start playback on the second device before restarting the PC.
Check YouTube autoplay and PC sleep separately
YouTube may pause unattended web playback
Even when Windows does not restart, YouTube may display “Video paused. Continue watching?” after 60 minutes of uninterrupted autoplay on the web and wait for you to select “Yes.” This is separate from Windows Update and can interrupt unattended listening. Screen and sleep timeouts do not control update restarts
In Windows 11, screen and sleep settings are under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Adjusting them may help keep the PC awake during listening, but it does not replace active hours or restart scheduling and cannot keep playback alive during a reboot. Microsoft describes these options in Power settings in Windows 11.
What to know about Windows 11 update restarts
Microsoft’s article dated August 14, 2026, covering Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, describes a gradual rollout that combines some restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly security update. Other update categories may still install sooner, the experience may not be available on every device, and updates will not be held indefinitely.
