Dhruv Rathee started on YouTube with travel videos in 2014; his political commentary began later, with his first political video dated 16 September 2016. The distinction matters: the old headline’s “23-year-old” is a historical description, not a current age, and “fighting Modi and the Right wing since 2014” compresses two different chapters of his career.
Who is Dhruv Rathee?
Dhruv Rathee is an Indian YouTuber and commentator whose main channel covers current affairs, politics, history and science. His official site also describes a separate channel focused on travel and lifestyle. His work therefore spans more than criticism of the government or the political right.
TIME reported in October 2023 that Rathee had 13 million subscribers at that time. Al Jazeera reported in May 2024 that his audience had passed 20 million. Those are dated figures, not a current subscriber count. Rathee’s official site says YouTube awarded him a Diamond Play Button in 2023 for passing 10 million subscribers on his main channel.
When did Rathee start making political videos?
He began with travel vlogging
TIME’s 2023 profile says Rathee discovered YouTube in 2014 and started by making travel vlogs. Al Jazeera’s 2024 account dates his first political commentary video to 16 September 2016. That video addressed the BJP’s IT cell and alleged efforts to manipulate political narratives.

How he says his views changed
According to Al Jazeera, Rathee initially welcomed Narendra Modi’s rise to power. He says he became disillusioned in 2015 after a dispute involving the central government and Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party government over an anti-corruption helpline. This is Rathee’s account of what changed his outlook, as reported by Al Jazeera; it is not a claim that his political videos began in 2015.
What does Rathee make videos about?
Political explainers are a prominent part of his public profile, but the subjects are broader. TIME describes his move from travel vlogging to Hindi videos examining trending claims. Rathee’s official site lists current affairs, politics, history and science for his main channel, while the separate channel covers travel and lifestyle. Al Jazeera also notes coverage of subjects including heatwaves.

Rathee has described his aim as making complicated subjects accessible. In a 2023 interview with TIME, he said: “My aim is to present things as simply as possible and break down complex issues in simple words.” Al Jazeera reported that he uses everyday Hindi and works with researchers, scriptwriters and editors.
How does he describe his research and corrections process?
Rathee’s official website says that sources for his videos are published publicly. Its resource page describes research documents, a source archive and a corrections listing for videos released after 1 January 2024. The site says the archive is live and that some source documents may still be in preparation.

These pages explain the process Rathee and his team say they follow; they are not independent verification of every video’s accuracy. Al Jazeera reported Rathee’s acknowledgment that some earlier videos mixed facts and opinions. He told the outlet: “I take criticism from well-meaning people seriously. In some of my earlier videos, I mixed facts with opinions but that has changed now.”
Why is Rathee’s work controversial?
Supporters see his accessible explainers as a counter to political messaging and misinformation. Al Jazeera quoted political satirist Akash Banerjee describing Rathee’s appeal to Modi supporters and undecided viewers as a way to make criticism feel “not ‘antinational’ – its anti-hate and anti-party worship.” That is Banerjee’s interpretation, not an independent finding about the audience as a whole.

Criticism has also focused on perceived selectivity: Al Jazeera reported that critics accuse Rathee of repeating opposition talking points. Rathee rejected specific allegations covered in that article. The available reporting does not establish that he is politically neutral, nor does it support reducing all his work to party advocacy. Readers assessing an individual video can distinguish its sourced factual claims from its commentary and framing.
His work has also faced reported pressure. TIME reported in 2023 that India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting blocked one of his videos over a disputed map of Kashmir and that threats were sent to his wife. These are events as reported by TIME, not evidence by themselves for or against the accuracy of his videos.
