Who is Shara Blue Mathes?
Mathes is publicly described as a case manager and harm-reduction specialist at Housing Works. TV Insider also reports that she has worked as a sober companion since 2011 and previously worked as an alcohol-and-drug counselor. She is a cancer survivor and the mother of a son, Cooper. TV Insider’s profile reports that she shared a video after completing chemotherapy in 2021.

How did Shara and Chaz Bono meet?
They met in 1983 as teenagers at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, according to their wedding website. The couple’s account describes an immediate crush, performing together in plays and variety shows, and Shara being the first girl Chaz kissed. Chaz later moved to New York to attend a performing-arts high school, and they drifted apart in their twenties. Their wedding website recounts the early connection; E! also reports Chaz’s description of Shara as the first girl he kissed. E!’s report quotes him saying they first met more than 40 years ago.
When did they reconnect and start dating?
Their wedding website says Mathes returned to Bono’s home in 2009 to make amends as part of her 12-step program. Both were sober, but each was in another relationship. They stayed friends and saw each other at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings; the account does not give a precise date for that 2009 visit. Their account of the relationship says Bono was single and Mathes knew she wanted a divorce by the end of the 2016 holiday season.
