Amal Clooney is a barrister specializing in international law and human rights, an Oxford professor of practice, and co-founder and co-chair of the Clooney Foundation for Justice. She is also George Clooney’s wife, but her public work spans international courts, government service, teaching and legal aid. Doughty Street Chambers reproduces legal-directory praise describing her as “a brilliant legal mind”—an assessment, not an objective measure of her work.
What does Amal Clooney do?
Clooney practices as a barrister in international law and human rights. Her work includes representing clients before international courts and advising governments and individuals, according to her Doughty Street Chambers profile and the UK government’s profile.
Her career has included work at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, as well as service as a prosecutor at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Before her international practice, she worked in litigation at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York and was admitted to the New York Bar, Doughty Street says.
What public-service role did she hold?
From April 2019 to September 2020, Clooney served as the UK’s Special Envoy for Media Freedom. In that role, she helped convene a panel of legal experts whose recommendations outlined legal and policy measures governments could take to improve media freedom, according to the UK government.

Doughty Street also says she later served as deputy chair of the International Bar Association’s Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom. The chambers profile reports that the panel provided advice to more than 50 governments, but does not date that figure.
What is her role at Oxford?
On 6 February 2025, the University of Oxford announced Clooney’s appointment as Visiting Professor of Practice in International Law at the Blavatnik School of Government. The university’s appointment announcement gives that formal title. Doughty Street’s profile also lists her as Professor of Practice at Oxford, a Senior Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice—which she co-founded—and an Honorary Fellow of St Hugh’s College.
What does the Clooney Foundation for Justice do?
Amal and George Clooney co-founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice, and Amal is co-chair of its board. The foundation says it provides free legal aid in defense of free speech and women’s rights in more than 40 countries; that reach is the foundation’s own description on its Amal Clooney profile.
The University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School profile says the foundation’s work has led to dozens of journalists being freed and thousands of women receiving legal support, including help concerning child marriage, violence and economic discrimination. The profile gives no publication date for those aggregate outcomes, so they should be read as Oxford’s reported account rather than as figures newly measured in 2026.
