Margaret Simon in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
Fortson played the central character in the 2023 film adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel. Margaret is a young protagonist navigating early adolescence, including questions about growing up and her place in the world. Teen Vogue described the part as Fortson’s first major leading role.
Fortson told Teen Vogue that she connected with the character’s experiences while preparing and working on the role: “I was going through the exact same stuff that Margaret was while I was working on her character.” In the same interview, she reflected, “I’m still figuring myself out every single day.” These are her recollections in the context of discussing the film, not a basis for assuming that every detail of Margaret’s life mirrors her own.
