Who Inherited Heath Ledger’s Estate—and Where His Family Is Now

Heath Ledger’s family said in 2008 that it had gifted his estate to daughter Matilda, who was not named in his pre-birth will. Here’s what the public record says—and what it doesn’t.

Heath Ledger’s daughter, Matilda, was not named in his 2003 will, which predated her birth. After Ledger died, his family said it would provide for Matilda and her mother, Michelle Williams; in September 2008, Ledger’s father, Kim, said the family had gifted everything to Matilda. The public record does not establish the legal details of that transfer or Matilda’s present-day private life.

Who inherited Heath Ledger’s estate?

Ledger’s family ultimately said Matilda received the inheritance. In a statement reported by ABC News in September 2008, Kim Ledger said: “There is no claim. Our family has gifted everything to Matilda.” ABC News’ report described the announcement as a family gift.

That outcome is distinct from the terms of Ledger’s original will. Reporting at the time said the will named his parents and three sisters, not Matilda or Williams. The family’s later statement identified Matilda—not Williams—as the recipient of the gift.

Was Matilda named in Heath Ledger’s will?

No. Ledger signed the will in 2003, before Matilda was born. Contemporary coverage said it named his parents and sisters. The will reportedly listed US$145,000 in assets and cash at that time; that figure describes the 2003 document, not the eventual value of Ledger’s estate. ABC News

What did Ledger’s family say after his death?

In March 2008, Ledger’s father said the family would look after Matilda and Williams. “Matilda is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family,” Kim Ledger said in a statement reported by CBS News. “They will be taken care of and that’s how Heath would want it to be.”

In September, Kim Ledger described the family’s decision as a gift to Matilda, saying, “There is no claim. Our family has gifted everything to Matilda,” according to ABC News. The reports establish what the family publicly said, but do not specify the legal mechanism, any trust terms, payout schedule, or when Matilda could access funds.

How much was Heath Ledger’s estate worth?

ABC News, republishing an AFP report in 2008, said the estate was believed to be worth more than US$20 million. That was a contemporary estimate, not a verified final accounting. It should not be confused with the US$145,000 in assets and cash listed in the 2003 will, which reflected an earlier point in time. ABC News / AFP

Where is Heath Ledger’s daughter now?

Public reporting offers only limited updates about Matilda, and does not establish where she lives, what she does, or details of her daily life. In a May 2025 profile, Vanity Fair described Matilda as 19 and reported that Williams and her husband, director Thomas Kail, have three younger children. Williams also spoke about motherhood in an interview, saying, “Thank God there’s Matilda.” That dated report is not evidence of Matilda’s current location or lifestyle.
