What celebrities have said about Beyoncé ranges from deep admiration for her music to criticism of specific award-show moments and performances. These reported comments, made between 2008 and 2023, are snapshots of particular occasions—not evidence of a single celebrity consensus or an ongoing feud.
What stars have praised Beyoncé?
Adele called Lemonade monumental
At the 2017 Grammy Awards, Adele praised Beyoncé while accepting Album of the Year. TIME reported that Adele called Beyoncé “my artist of my life” and described Lemonade as “so monumental” and “so beautiful and soul-bearing.” She also said Beyoncé’s work empowered her friends and told her, “I love you. I always have, and I always will.” TIME reported Adele’s remarks and the Grammy context.

Backstage, Adele said she thought it was Beyoncé’s year and questioned what more Beyoncé had to do to win Album of the Year. TIME also recalled Adele saying she had listened to Beyoncé since age 11 and calling her “my Michael Jackson.” These comments were expressions of admiration around the 2017 awards, not a general verdict on the Recording Academy.
Madonna and Oprah praised the Renaissance tour
In 2023, Madonna posted a message of thanks after attending a Beyoncé concert, writing, “Thank you Queen B. for your Magnificent show! My Daughters were enthralled! We Love You.” Oprah Winfrey also praised the tour publicly, saying, “I have never in my life experienced something as transcendent as @beyonce’s Renaissance Tour.” The Los Angeles Times reported both reactions.

A range of artists and actors have voiced admiration
ELLE’s 2016 celebrity-fan roundup collected praise from a broad range of entertainers. Rihanna called Beyoncé “incredibly talented” and said she was “what every female artist should strive to be like.” Lady Gaga recalled that she “just adore[s]” Beyoncé and said they had a great time filming “Video Phone.” Taylor Swift described her response as “joyous admiration and appreciation,” while Nicki Minaj praised Beyoncé’s drive. ELLE’s roundup also includes comments attributed to other artists, actors and public figures; it is a compilation, rather than the original venue for each remark.
What criticism has Beyoncé received from other stars?
Aretha Franklin objected to a 2008 Grammy introduction
At the 2008 Grammy Awards, Beyoncé introduced Tina Turner as “the queen.” Aretha Franklin objected to the wording. In an Associated Press report carried by CBS News, Franklin said she was unsure whose toes or ego she might have bruised, then called the episode “a cheap shot for controversy.” The same report says she ended with “love to Beyonce anyway”—important context that tempers the criticism rather than erasing it. CBS News carried the Associated Press report.

Etta James criticized a performance of “At Last”
In 2009, Etta James criticized Beyoncé’s performance of “At Last” at an inauguration-related concert. Good Morning America’s report noted that James and Beyoncé had appeared together at the Cadillac Records premiere, but framed James’s comments as a pointed response to that performance. They should not be read as a comprehensive judgment of Beyoncé’s career. Good Morning America reported the remarks and their context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read these comments in context
- Separate the subject from the person. Some remarks celebrate Beyoncé’s music or stagecraft; the critical examples address a particular introduction or performance.
- Check where a quote first appeared. Adele’s Grammy remarks, Franklin’s response and the 2023 tour reactions were reported in event-based coverage. ELLE’s 2016 article gathers comments from elsewhere, so its attributions are best understood as a secondary compilation.
- Do not mistake a roundup for a consensus. A list of selected praise or criticism cannot establish what all celebrities think, and individual comments do not by themselves prove a feud.
Grimes offered a related perspective while responding to criticism of Beyoncé’s success: “In my opinion it’s kind of crappy to belittle an artist such as Beyoncé just because she is successful.” The reported remarks also praised Beyoncé’s combination of choreography and visuals. That response shows how some celebrity commentary addresses the criticism itself, rather than simply adding another review of Beyoncé’s work. NME reported Grimes’s comments.
