The largest officially recorded lifetime total attributed to one mother is 69 children, credited by Guinness World Records to the unnamed first wife of Feodor Vassilyev. Guinness itself cautions that the centuries-old claim should be treated skeptically. Other sources report large totals for three more women, but the evidence available does not establish ten comparable, reliably verified records—so a definitive “top 10” would overstate what is known.
Why there is no reliable top 10
“Most children” can refer to a mother’s lifetime total, a single birth, or children who survived infancy. Those are different measures. The available sources do not supply ten independently verifiable lifetime records with comparable documentation, and some totals come from a secondary compilation rather than an authoritative record body. The cases below are therefore reported claims, not a definitive ranking of ten proven records.
The leading reported lifetime claims
| Mother | Reported total | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Unnamed first wife of Feodor Vassilyev | 69 | Guinness World Records identifies this as the greatest officially recorded number of children born to one mother, while cautioning that the historic claim should be taken “with a pinch of salt.” Guinness record page |
| First wife of Yakov Kirillov | 57 | A secondary compilation reports this total; it is not established here as a verified, comparable record. Secondary compilation |
| Mariam Nabatanzi | 44 | A secondary compilation reports this total; the source reviewed does not establish a comparable record ranking. Secondary compilation |
| Elizabeth Greenhill | 39 | A secondary compilation reports this total; the source reviewed does not establish a comparable record ranking. Secondary compilation |
The 69-child claim: what Guinness says
Guinness attributes the 69 births to Feodor Vassilyev’s first wife, whose name it says is unknown. The births are reported as occurring across 27 confinements: 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets. Guinness’s record page explicitly warns that the historic claim should be treated with caution. It says a predisposition to hyper-ovulation is conceivable, not proven; that possibility is not independent confirmation of the total. Guinness World Records
A 2021 Guinness overview also says the woman’s name is unknown. The name “Valentina,” sometimes attached to her in popular accounts, is not established by these Guinness sources. Guinness separately reports that Feodor later fathered 18 children with another wife; those children do not belong in the first wife’s total. Guinness overview, 2021

A separate record: nine children in one delivery
Halima Cissé gave birth to nine children in one delivery in Casablanca on 4 May 2021. Guinness describes this as the first known instance of nonuplets surviving birth. It is a record about the number delivered at once, not a lifetime total, so it should not be ranked alongside claims about how many children a woman gave birth to over her life. How to read these figures
- Officially recorded does not mean beyond question: Guinness recognizes the Vassilyev claim but also flags uncertainty about its historical reliability.
- Reported totals are not equivalent to verified records: the figures of 57, 44, and 39 come from a secondary list and are not demonstrated by the source reviewed to form a dependable ranking.
- Births, pregnancies, and surviving children differ: the cited figures do not establish a consistent comparison of survival through infancy or of children alive at a later date.
- A list of ten would imply more certainty than the evidence supports: adding names or totals to fill out the headline would risk presenting unverified claims as established fact.
