Spoilers for the original Solo Leveling main story through its ending. Sung Jinwoo is the most powerful hunter by the end of that story, but there is no official publisher or game-issued top-ten leaderboard. This ranking is an editorial comparison of hunters in the original main story, weighing demonstrated combat, abilities, status as context, and how firmly the story supports each placement. It does not fold in the later Solo Leveling: KARMA timeline, which begins after Jinwoo defeats the Monarchs and uses the Cup of Reincarnation.
How this ranking defines “powerful”
The list compares characters at their strongest relevant point in the original main story, rather than treating a hunter’s first appearance as their final form. Direct fights and demonstrated abilities matter more than reputation. Hunter ranks and titles help establish context, but they are not a mathematical scale: an S-rank label or National-Level status does not, by itself, determine who wins a matchup.
The publisher’s descriptions illustrate why story stage matters. Yen Press / Ize Press identifies Jinwoo as an E-rank hunter at the beginning, then calls him Korea’s strongest S-rank hunter after Jeju Island. That later description is a story-era designation, not a claim that every hunter’s strength can be arranged into a permanent official order.
The 10 most powerful hunters, ranked
1. Sung Jinwoo
Why he ranks first: Jinwoo’s strength changes dramatically over the course of the story. At the start he is an E-rank hunter; after surviving the System’s trials, he gains abilities and grows beyond the limits that defined ordinary hunters. By the end of the original main story, his command of shadow soldiers, personal combat ability, and capacity to contend with the Monarchs put him in a category no other hunter reaches.

Evidence and scope: The publisher’s Vol. 8 description calls him “the strongest S-rank hunter and the hero of Korea” after Jeju Island. That is useful evidence for his standing at that point, but this ranking places him according to his later main-story version, not just his post-Jeju status. The official KARMA summary describes a still later timeline: Jinwoo has defeated the Monarchs, used the Cup of Reincarnation to turn back time, and continues fighting in a dimensional gap. That later version is outside this list’s comparison.
2. Thomas Andre
Why he ranks here: Thomas is a National-Level Hunter and the Scavenger Guild’s master, as identified in Netmarble’s ARISE character material. His enormous physical strength and durability make him one of the most imposing human opponents in the original story. His direct confrontation with Jinwoo supplies stronger comparative evidence than his title alone: it establishes his exceptional power, while also showing that he falls short of Jinwoo.
Evidence caveat: “National-Level” is a status, not a precise universal measurement. Netmarble’s brief official ARISE character material identifies Thomas as a National-Level Hunter and Scavenger Guild master, so it is best treated as supporting context rather than an exhaustive account of Thomas’s canon feats.
3. Liu Zhigang
Why he ranks here: Liu is presented as China’s foremost hunter and is associated with the National-Level tier. His standing among the world’s leading hunters gives him a strong claim near the top of any human-only comparison. However, Yen Press / Ize Press’s publisher material does not provide a detailed, direct fight that would establish a definitive order between Liu and Thomas.

Placement confidence: A fan wiki reports Liu as the world’s second-ranked hunter, but that is secondary-source ranking information, not an official all-time power chart. His placement just below Thomas is therefore an informed judgment, not a canon-certified result.
4. Christopher Reed
Why he ranks here: Christopher is another National-Level Hunter, and the story treats him as one of the world’s elite human combatants. His abilities and status warrant a place among the strongest hunters, although Yen Press / Ize Press’s publisher descriptions do not offer enough direct comparative detail to claim that his placement over the hunters below him is certain.
What the rank means: This is a best-fit position based on his elite standing and the scale of threats surrounding his arc, not an official numeric ranking. The story gives readers less clean head-to-head evidence for ordering him against every other top hunter than it does for Jinwoo’s eventual supremacy.
5. Go Gunhee
Why he ranks here: Go Gunhee is an S-rank hunter and the chairman of the Korean Hunters Association. His age and physical condition limit what he can demonstrate in ordinary combat, but his latent power and exceptional status make him more than an administrator with a prestigious title. The story reveals a level of potential and strength that supports placing him among the top hunters.

He ranks below the world-level powerhouses here, but the distinction is less secure than Jinwoo’s lead or the evidence from a clear direct matchup.
Rank #4
6. Sung Il-Hwan
Why he ranks here: Jinwoo’s father is a formidable hunter whose strength and circumstances set him apart from ordinary S-ranks. His connection to the larger conflict and his ability to face powerful enemies establish that he belongs in this upper tier, even though his time in the story is limited.
Evidence caveat: Il-Hwan’s brief appearances leave fewer opportunities for comparison than the more frequently shown fighters. His placement reflects the strength the story reveals, not a comprehensive record of matchups.
7. Cha Hae-In
Why she ranks here: Cha is one of Korea’s strongest active hunters, with exceptional combat skill and speed. Her battle experience and ability to perform against dangerous monsters make her a more convincing high placement than status alone would. She is among the strongest hunters who are not defined by a National-Level designation.
Placement confidence: The story does not supply a decisive series of direct contests between Cha and every hunter ranked above her. Her slot reflects demonstrated ability and the scale of her role, while the exact spacing within this group remains debatable.
8. Baek Yoonho
Why he ranks here: Baek is an S-rank hunter and the White Tiger Guild’s leader. His transformation ability gives him a clear combat advantage, and his physical power makes him a dangerous close-range fighter. He belongs in the upper group of Korean hunters, though the story does not establish that his title or guild leadership alone places him above every other S-rank.
9. Choi Jong-In
Why he ranks here: Choi, the Hunters Guild master, is a powerful S-rank mage whose fire magic gives him substantial offensive range and area damage. That breadth matters: a hunter’s threat is not measured only by physical strength or performance in a one-on-one brawl. His placement reflects his destructive capability, while leaving room for debate against other high-level hunters with different strengths.
10. Min Byung-Gyu
Why he makes the list: Min is an S-rank healer whose contribution is less about dealing the greatest damage and more about keeping elite hunters alive. His healing and support abilities can change the outcome of a difficult raid, which makes “power” broader than direct attack strength. He takes the final place because the list weighs practical combat value as well as raw offensive force.

Why the middle of the ranking is less certain
Jinwoo’s late-story lead is clear, but the original story does not publish a universal ladder that settles every other placement. The official sources used for context provide descriptions, status labels, and story summaries rather than a certified top ten. In particular, limited direct matchups and characters whose strongest abilities are shown only briefly make close ordering interpretive. English spellings and labels can also vary between translations; the names here are kept consistent, not offered as a mandatory transliteration standard.
