Cameron Diaz has been publicly reported to have dated Carlos de La Torre, Matt Dillon, Jared Leto, Justin Timberlake, Paul Sculfor, Alex Rodriguez and Benji Madden, with John Mayer described in one retrospective as a brief dalliance. The reports vary in certainty and detail, so this is a timeline of publicly reported relationships—not a definitive or exhaustive account of her private life. Diaz married Madden on January 5, 2015; he is her husband, not a former boyfriend.
Who did Cameron Diaz date?
The most useful way to read Diaz’s dating history is chronologically, while keeping confirmed-sounding relationship accounts distinct from looser reports that she was “linked to” someone. Biography.com’s retrospective and ABC News’s 2012 roundup support the broad timeline below, though neither establishes every start and end date with equal precision.
| Person | What the reporting says |
|---|---|
| Carlos de La Torre | Diaz’s early-1990s relationship with video producer de La Torre; outlets differ in how they date and describe its length. |
| Matt Dillon | Reported relationship in 1996–1998, described by ABC News as lasting about two years. |
| Jared Leto | Reported relationship beginning in 1999 and ending in 2003; engagement rumors were not confirmation of an engagement. |
| Justin Timberlake | Broadly reported as a 2003–2007 relationship. |
| John Mayer | Described by ABC News as a brief dalliance after the Timberlake breakup, without a precise date range. |
| Paul Sculfor | ABC News says Diaz publicly went out with and dated the model for the following year. |
| Alex Rodriguez | Reported as a relationship of about a year; the account was attributed to Us Weekly by ABC News. |
| Benji Madden | Diaz began dating the Good Charlotte musician in 2014; they married in January 2015. |
How the relationships were reported
Carlos de La Torre: an early-1990s relationship
Diaz met video producer Carlos de La Torre while filming an L.A. Gear advertisement, according to ABC News’s 2012 retrospective. That article places their meeting in 1990 and quotes Diaz, speaking to People in 1994, as saying: “I spent the entire day trying to get him to talk to me.” Biography.com describes the relationship as lasting five years and ending in 1995. Because the accounts frame the dates and duration differently, “early 1990s” is the safer summary rather than a precise, reconciled span. Biography.com; ABC News.
Matt Dillon: reported from 1996 to 1998
Biography.com dates Diaz and actor Matt Dillon’s relationship to 1996–1998; ABC News characterizes it as a two-year relationship. ABC also quotes Diaz’s 1997 Guardian interview: “I love him incredibly.” The quote reflects what Diaz said at the time, rather than a retrospective judgment. Biography.com; ABC News.

Jared Leto: a relationship reported from 1999 to 2003

Reports about a ring prompted engagement speculation, but the available accounts do not establish that Diaz and Leto were engaged. Biography.com; ABC News.
Justin Timberlake: the 2003–2007 relationship
Diaz and singer and actor Justin Timberlake were reported to have dated from 2003 until 2007. Biography.com says the relationship followed her breakup with Leto, while ABC News describes it as a four-year relationship beginning in 2003. The year-level chronology is better supported than exact dates. Biography.com; ABC News.

John Mayer: a brief report, not a long-term timeline
ABC News describes Diaz as having a brief dalliance with musician John Mayer after her breakup with Timberlake. That retrospective does not give a precise date range, so it is more accurate to call this briefly reported than to assign it a start or end year. ABC News.
Paul Sculfor: publicly seen dating
ABC News says Diaz was linked to both Bradley Cooper and model Paul Sculfor, but distinguishes Sculfor as the person she publicly went out with and dated for the next year. That supports including Sculfor as a reported dating partner. Cooper belongs in a different category: the same account describes him as a link, not a confirmed relationship. ABC News.

Alex Rodriguez: a relationship reported as about a year
Biography.com says Diaz was “linked to” baseball player Alex Rodriguez. ABC News’s 2012 account says they called it quits the previous September after about a year together, attributing that report to Us Weekly. The descriptions are not identical, so this relationship is best presented with that attribution rather than as an independently verified chronology. Biography.com; ABC News.
Benji Madden: dating in 2014, marriage in 2015
Diaz began dating Benji Madden, musician and guitarist for Good Charlotte, in May 2014, according to Biography.com. In a 2016 SiriusXM interview account, Diaz recalled that Madden’s twin brother, Joel, brought him to a barbecue at her home. She said she recognized Benji as a romantic possibility. That recollection offers her own account of how the relationship began, distinct from the retrospective timelines. SiriusXM.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the timeline can—and cannot—establish
- The names above are supported by published retrospective accounts, but the wording matters: some sources describe dating, while others say only “linked to” or report a brief dalliance.
- For several relationships, the reporting supports approximate years or durations rather than exact beginnings and endings. The table and timeline use that broader level of precision.
- These sources do not establish a complete inventory of Diaz’s private relationships. The article reflects publicly reported names, not proof that no other relationships existed.
How Diaz has spoken about contentment
In an Esquire interview quoted by ABC News, Diaz said: “For me, it’s about living in this moment, the best that I can.” ABC also reported her saying: “Contentment is about coming to terms with life as it is.” Those remarks are about her outlook, not a tally or ranking of her relationships. ABC News.
