The reporter Donald Trump called “piggy” was Catherine Lucey, Bloomberg News’s White House correspondent—not a journalist named Peggy.
The exchange took place aboard Air Force One on Friday, November 14, 2025, during a press gaggle. The official government transcript identifies Lucey by name immediately after Trump’s words: “Quiet. Quiet, piggy [Catherine Lucey, Bloomberg News].”
What happened aboard Air Force One
Lucey asked Trump about an email in which Jeffrey Epstein reportedly wrote that Trump “knew about the girls.” Trump said he knew nothing about the matter and shifted the discussion toward Epstein’s connections to former President Bill Clinton, Harvard president Larry Summers and other prominent people.
When Lucey began a follow-up question, asking why Trump was behaving as he was “if there’s nothing incriminating in the file,” Trump interrupted her.

“Quiet. Quiet, piggy.”
Video of the exchange circulated widely afterward, prompting criticism from journalists and press-freedom advocates. The incident became part of a wider debate over Trump’s confrontational treatment of reporters and the boundaries of presidential interactions with the press.

A Bloomberg spokesperson defended the work of the organization’s White House journalists:
“Our White House journalists perform a vital public service, asking questions without fear or favor. We remain focused on reporting issues of public interest fairly and accurately.”
The statement did not address the exchange in personal terms. It emphasized Bloomberg’s broader commitment to reporting public-interest issues fairly and accurately.
What the White House said
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Trump’s behavior on November 20, 2025. She said Trump had been “frank” and had become frustrated with reporters who spread what he considered false information. She did not identify a specific false statement by Lucey connected to the Air Force One exchange.

A White House official also alleged, without providing evidence, that Lucey had acted “in an inappropriate and unprofessional way” toward colleagues on the plane.
Why some people heard “Peggy”
Some online discussion treated the word as “Peggy,” either because of the audio or because of repeated social-media descriptions. The official transcript settles the identification: the reporter was Catherine Lucey of Bloomberg News.
The transcript is especially important here because it places the reporter’s name directly after the quoted remark. There is no indication in the official record that Trump was addressing a reporter named Peggy.
Why the exchange attracted attention
The episode was not simply a dispute over a question. Lucey was asking about Epstein-related allegations and Trump’s response to them, subjects of substantial public interest. Trump’s reply moved from denying knowledge of Epstein’s conduct to criticizing Epstein’s relationships with other prominent figures, before the president cut off the follow-up question.

Journalists and press-freedom advocates criticized the language as a demeaning personal attack on a woman reporter. The Society of Professional Journalists described the incident as part of a broader pattern of hostility toward reporters, particularly women.
For documentary viewers, the exchange offers a compact example of how a brief moment at a presidential press event can become a larger story: the original question, the president’s interruption, the official transcript, competing institutional responses and the broader argument about press access and accountability all matter.
