The seven-episode Netflix series premiered on December 4, 2025. This guide identifies the principal cast, explains each character’s place in the conflict, and clears up a few easily repeated name and status errors.
The two families at the center of The Abandons
The story takes place in Washington Territory in 1854, primarily around Jasper Hollow. Fiona Nolan runs a cattle ranch on land that also contains valuable silver. Constance Van Ness wants that land for her family’s mining ambitions, bringing the two households into direct conflict.
The Abandons are not related by blood. Fiona has built her family by taking in children and other people society has discarded. Their loyalty comes from shared survival and adoption rather than inheritance. The Van Nesses, by contrast, are a wealthy blood family whose influence is organized around Constance and the fortune left by her late husband.

The Abandons: cast and characters
Lena Headey as Fiona Nolan
Fiona is the fiercely protective matriarch of the Abandons. She runs the family’s cattle ranch in Jasper Hollow and refuses to give up the property to the Van Nesses, even as the silver beneath the land makes it increasingly valuable.
Her faith shapes the way she leads, but Fiona is not a passive or gentle authority figure. She is willing to make difficult and sometimes dangerous choices to protect the people she has adopted. Her children include Elias, Dahlia, Albert, and Lilla Belle. The central question around Fiona is whether protecting a family justifies controlling it.
Nick Robinson as Elias Teller
Elias was adopted by Fiona together with his sister, Dahlia. He is deeply connected to the family but increasingly resents Fiona’s methods and the limits she places on him. His frustration creates one of the major internal pressures within the Abandons.
Elias also becomes romantically involved with Trisha Van Ness. That relationship places him between the family that raised him and a woman whose family is trying to seize their land. It also gives the series a personal connection across the larger feud.

Dahlia is Elias’s adopted sister and one of the most openly defiant members of Fiona’s family. She is furious at the Van Nesses’ attempt to drive the Abandons out of Jasper Hollow.
Her experience of the conflict changes her. Over the course of the season, Dahlia hardens from an angry opponent into someone increasingly prepared to meet the Van Nesses on their own violent terms.

Lamar Johnson as Albert Mason
Albert is the steady, protective backbone of the Abandons. Where other members of the family may be pulled between emotion, resentment, or revenge, Albert often functions as the practical center.
He naturally takes on a leadership role and works to gather allies as the dispute with the Van Nesses grows. His character represents the family’s ability to organize rather than simply react.

Natalia del Riego as Lilla Belle
Lilla Belle is fiercely loyal to Fiona and the rest of the Abandons. She is willing to fight for the family’s home, and the season gradually reveals more about the trauma and resilience behind that loyalty.
Her history helps explain why the adopted family matters so much to her. Lilla Belle is not simply a supporting member of Fiona’s household; her past is part of the show’s larger examination of abandoned people building a place for themselves.
The Van Nesses: cast and characters
Gillian Anderson as Constance Van Ness
Constance is the iron-willed head of the Van Ness family. After inheriting her late husband’s mining fortune, she expands the family’s power and turns her attention to consolidating control on the frontier.
Her attempt to acquire Jasper Hollow puts her directly against Fiona. Constance’s influence comes from wealth, planning, and a willingness to use other people to accomplish her goals. She is both the family’s strategist and the driving force behind the pressure placed on the Abandons.

Lucas Till as Garret Van Ness
Garret is Constance’s younger son and the expected heir to the Van Ness business. He is frustrated by his mother’s refusal to reveal every detail of her plans, leaving him uncertain about his position inside the family he is supposed to inherit.
Although Garret may resent being kept out of the inner circle, he is not merely an innocent caught in Constance’s schemes. He demonstrates a capacity for cruelty of his own, making him another danger to the Abandons.
Aisling Franciosi as Trisha Van Ness
Trisha is Constance’s daughter and Garret’s sister. She feels alienated from the Van Ness household and is drawn to Elias, whom she sees as another outsider despite the difference between their families.
Her relationship with Elias forces her to choose between loyalty to her blood relatives and a developing sense of justice. Trisha is often called Trish, but Trisha Van Ness is the character’s full name.
Toby Hemingway as Willem Van Ness
Willem is Constance’s volatile and entitled eldest son. His actions and subsequent disappearance help ignite the central conflict between the Van Nesses and Fiona’s family.
Although Willem is not one of the season’s primary point-of-view characters, his position within the Van Ness family makes him an important catalyst for the story’s escalation.

Other important characters
Michiel Huisman as Roache
Roache is an outlaw hired by Constance to find her missing son, Willem. As the season develops, Constance relies on him for increasingly violent and illicit work connected to her mining ambitions.
Roache’s loyalties are difficult to predict, which makes him more than a straightforward hired gun. Netflix’s official cast materials identify the character as Roache. Some third-party databases expand the name to “Xavier Roache,” but that longer version is not the name used in Netflix’s own guide and promotional material.
Michael Greyeyes as Jack Cree
Jack Cree is Constance’s trusted enforcer and protector. He previously worked for her late husband, Emmet, and now serves as one of the main forces preserving Constance’s authority.
His role is different from Roache’s. Jack is tied to the Van Ness power structure and acts as a dependable representative of Constance, while Roache operates with more independence and uncertainty.
Ryan Hurst as Miles Alderton
Miles is one of Jasper Hollow’s older settlers. He worries that Fiona’s resistance will bring disaster to the entire settlement and generally favors law and order.
Even so, Miles remains an important ally to the Abandons. The series also reveals unresolved parts of his past, giving him a personal connection to the community’s tensions beyond his public position.

Is The Abandons returning for season 2?
No. Netflix canceled The Abandons after one season on January 21, 2026. The complete first season contains seven episodes, all released on December 4, 2025. It is therefore inaccurate to describe the show as awaiting renewal or to list a second season as officially planned.
Common cast and character mix-ups
- The title is The Abandons. It is sometimes incorrectly listed as The Abandoned.
- There are seven episodes. The first season is not a six-episode run.
- Elias Teller is the correct character name. An early Netflix gallery used “Elisa Teller,” but the cast and series guides identify Nick Robinson’s character as Elias.
- Lena Headey is the correct spelling. An early gallery caption reportedly used “Lena Heady.”
- Trisha is the full name. “Trish” is a shortened form used for Trisha Van Ness.
- Netflix calls Michiel Huisman’s character Roache. “Xavier Roache” appears in some outside databases, but it should not be presented as Netflix’s official character name without noting the variation.
