Bublé was the only coach from the Season 27 panel to continue directly into the new season. McEntire, Snoop and Horan returned after time away, while Kelsea Ballerini, John Legend and Adam Levine were not part of the Season 28 coaching lineup.
Season 28 premiered on September 22, 2025, and concluded on December 16, 2025. Aiden Ross won for Team Niall, giving Horan his third coaching victory.
The Season 28 coaches at a glance
NBC and Peacock presented Season 28 as an all-star coaching lineup rather than a season with a first-time main-panel coach. All four red-chair holders had coached The Voice before.

Peacock’s Season 28 coach guide confirms the lineup, the coaches’ previous records and the panel’s seating arrangement. The important comparison with Season 27 is simple: Michael Bublé was the only Season 27 coach who stayed for Season 28.

Who returned from Season 27?
Michael Bublé was the sole direct holdover
Bublé coached Seasons 26, 27 and 28. Entering Season 28, he had already won twice: Sofronio Vasquez won Season 26, and Adam David won Season 27. That made Bublé the only member of the previous season’s panel to occupy the same coaching role again without a break.
He did not make it three consecutive wins. Niall Horan ultimately won Season 28 with Aiden Ross.
Which coaches came back after time away?
Reba McEntire returned after one season off
McEntire coached Seasons 24, 25 and 26 before sitting out Season 27. She returned for Season 28 as a four-time coach overall. Her previous win came in Season 25, when Asher HaVon won for Team Reba.
Public reporting connected McEntire’s Season 27 absence to scheduling, including work associated with her sitcom Happy’s Place. That is best understood as a scheduling explanation—not evidence of a dispute with NBC or a permanent departure from The Voice.
Niall Horan returned after a three-season gap
Horan’s break was longer. He last coached in Season 24, so he sat out Seasons 25, 26 and 27 before returning for Season 28. He had won Seasons 23 and 24 with Gina Miles and Huntley, respectively.
Coverage linked his time away primarily to his 2024 world tour. NBC later promoted his return as part of the Season 28 lineup. Horan went on to win a third season as a coach when Aiden Ross took the title for Team Niall.

Snoop Dogg returned after sitting out Season 27
Snoop Dogg coached Season 26, missed Season 27 and came back for Season 28. He entered the season without a previous winner.
NBC announced his return as part of a new multi-year deal involving his Death Row Pictures production company, but it did not provide a detailed public explanation for why he was absent from Season 27. There is therefore no reliable basis for assigning his hiatus to a particular personal or scheduling reason.

The three Season 27 coaches who were not included in the Season 28 lineup were Kelsea Ballerini, John Legend and Adam Levine. “Not returning for Season 28” is the accurate description. It does not automatically mean that any of them permanently left the franchise, was fired or had a conflict with NBC.
Kelsea Ballerini: a one-season main-panel coaching stint
Ballerini was a first-time main-panel coach in Season 27 and did not return to a red chair for Season 28. Her public comments described the experience as a temporary but meaningful chapter, comparing the end of the season to the feeling of summer camp ending.
There is no solid public evidence that she was dismissed or left because of a dispute. The available evidence supports describing Season 27 as a one-season coaching role.
There is also an important distinction: Ballerini later appeared during Season 28 as a battle advisor for Team Bublé. Her appearance on the program did not make her one of the four Season 28 coaches. A coach occupies a red chair and leads a team throughout the competition; a battle advisor or mentor assists a coach for a particular stage or episode.

John Legend: absent amid tour scheduling
Legend coached Season 27 but was absent from Season 28. The strongest public explanation was a scheduling conflict with his Get Lifted 20th Anniversary Tour, which ran through 2025 and concluded in Oakland on December 9.
That tour context was widely reported, but NBC did not issue a detailed statement confirming that it was the sole reason for Legend’s absence. The careful wording is that the tour appears to have been the scheduling factor, rather than saying that NBC officially announced he was leaving because of it.
One chronology point is worth correcting: Legend left the panel after Season 27, not after Season 26. He was one of the four Season 27 coaches alongside Bublé, Levine and Ballerini.
His absence from Season 28 was not permanent. Legend later returned for Season 29.
Adam Levine: absent amid Maroon 5 commitments
Levine returned to The Voice for Season 27 after a long absence, but he was not brought back for Season 28. His non-return coincided with Maroon 5’s new album cycle and the band’s Love Is Like Tour, which began on October 6, 2025.

Those music commitments are the likely explanation reported publicly, but NBC did not provide a detailed official reason. The most accurate summary is that Levine was not brought back for Season 28 amid Maroon 5’s album and touring plans—not that he permanently quit The Voice.
Levine also returned in Season 29, so “left the red chairs” in this comparison means only that he was absent from the Season 28 panel.
Season 27 versus Season 28: the simplest comparison

The win totals below are deliberately dated to the start of Season 28:
- Michael Bublé — two wins: Sofronio Vasquez in Season 26 and Adam David in Season 27.
- Reba McEntire — one win: Asher HaVon in Season 25.
- Niall Horan — two wins: Gina Miles in Season 23 and Huntley in Season 24.
- Snoop Dogg — no wins: Season 28 was his second coaching season.
After the season, Horan’s total rose to three because Aiden Ross won Season 28 for Team Niall.

Peacock reported that Snoop returned to his previous seat, Bublé took the chair opposite him, and Horan and McEntire occupied the two center chairs. Unless referring to the official seating image, it is safer not to describe an exact left-to-right order.

When did Season 28 premiere, and how could viewers watch?
Season 28 premiered on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Episodes were available to stream on Peacock the following day. NBC and Peacock listed the season’s prize as a $100,000 cash award and a recording contract with Universal Music Group.
Because the season is now complete, the current result is more useful than the original premiere-only framing: Aiden Ross won on December 16, 2025, representing Team Niall. The premiere date and NBC fall schedule were reported by Peacock and NBCUniversal.
What does “left” mean here?
For this article, “left the red chairs” means was not a Season 28 main-panel coach. It does not mean that the coach permanently ended their relationship with The Voice.
That distinction matters because:
- Ballerini was absent as a coach but returned as a Season 28 battle advisor.
- Legend and Levine were absent from Season 28 but returned as coaches in Season 29.
- McEntire, Horan and Snoop had previously sat out seasons and were later brought back.
Unless NBC or the coach gives a specific public explanation, it is also better to say “not returning for Season 28” than “quit,” “was fired” or “left permanently.”
