British Vogue’s March 2024 issue brought 40 women together on one cover for Edward Enninful’s final issue as editor-in-chief. The group portrait was a farewell to his six-and-a-half-year tenure and a celebration of women who shaped his time at the magazine.
Who appears on the cover?
The cover features women from fashion, film, music, sport and media. Among those identified in British Vogue’s gallery and contemporaneous coverage are Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Iman, Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams, Jane Fonda, Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Victoria Beckham and Adwoa Aboah. This is a selection, not a complete roll call; the magazine’s cover-shoot gallery provides the accompanying image captions.
The gallery contains 39 images, while British Vogue describes the cover group as 40 women. Those are different counts: the number of gallery images should not be mistaken for the number of cover participants.
Why did British Vogue bring 40 women together?
Enninful said no single woman could encapsulate his tenure, so the magazine chose a group portrait instead. In his final editor’s letter, published by British Vogue on 8 February 2024, he wrote: “So here it is: my 76th and final edition of Vogue, six and a half years and 153 cover stars later, including the 40 legendary women who feature on this cover.” Those tenure figures are Enninful’s own account.
#1 Best Overall
The issue marked the end of his role as editor-in-chief, not a conventional cover story centered on one model. The magazine presented the gathering as both a farewell and a celebration of people who helped shape his years at British Vogue.
Who created the cover shoot?
Steven Meisel photographed the fashion shoot, and Enninful styled it. Ned Rogers photographed the accompanying portfolio. According to Enninful’s account in the official shoot feature, the group met for a one-day shoot in December at Highline Stages in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District.
