Flynn joined the series as firefighter Derrick Gibson at the start of Season 12. Gibson first appeared in Episode 2, taking the place of Blake Gallo, played by Alberto Rosende, who left in the season opener, according to TVLine’s April 1, 2024 report.
What happened to Derrick Gibson?
In the March 27, 2024 episode, Gibson left Firehouse 51 to seek treatment after experiencing withdrawal from prescription drugs. TVLine identified that installment as Flynn’s final episode at the time. That describes the episode’s plot; the report does not establish a medical diagnosis beyond it.

TVLine reported that Flynn told sister publication Variety: “Just like all the fans, I was sad to see Gibson leave. He was a character I very much enjoyed playing. I had a wonderful experience during my time on Chicago Fire and have great respect for the cast and crew and hope to team up with Dick Wolf again when the time is right.”
