Spoilers for all six episodes of Butterfly, including the season finale. Rebecca survives David’s rescue, but her fate is left unresolved at the end of Season 1. Eunju is found gravely injured after Rebecca disappears; the finale does not reveal who hurt Eunju or whether Rebecca left voluntarily or was taken.
What happens to Rebecca in the finale?
Juno and Caddis operatives capture Rebecca and take her to an abandoned factory. David mounts a rescue and gets her out despite being seriously injured himself. Rebecca then stops David from killing Juno, asking him to spare her and demanding that Juno never threaten their family again. Juno and Hollis escape South Korea.
Afterward, the family reunites and talks about rebuilding their lives and moving to the United States. The reunion is fragile: at dinner, Rebecca accompanies Eunju to the restroom. David later finds Eunju gravely injured, and Rebecca is gone. He asks Eunju whether Rebecca hurt her, but she is too weak to answer. TIME’s August 13, 2025 account of the finale describes the attack and disappearance without resolving either.
Did Rebecca hurt Eunju, or was she kidnapped?
The finale confirms neither possibility. Rebecca’s absence and Eunju’s injury arrive together, making Rebecca’s involvement a natural suspicion, but suspicion is not proof. The scene also does not establish that Rebecca was abducted or that she chose to leave. As Marie Claire’s account of the cliffhanger notes, Rebecca’s culpability and whereabouts remain unanswered.
#1 Best Overall
Possible explanations include Rebecca attacking Eunju, someone else attacking Eunju and taking Rebecca, or Rebecca leaving on her own. Each is speculation: the released finale does not select an explanation or provide enough information to determine which is most likely.
Why does Rebecca spare Juno?
Rebecca’s choice to prevent David from killing Juno is the decisive act the finale does show. She wants Juno to stop threatening the family, but does not let David settle the conflict through murder. That choice briefly makes the family’s reunion seem possible; Eunju’s injury and Rebecca’s disappearance then unsettle that hope and reopen the question of whether the family can trust one another.

Daniel Dae Kim, the show’s star and an executive producer, described the family conflict to TIME this way: “David at that moment thinks he’s making the right decision for his family, but as is so often the case when you’re a parent, the decision you think is right for your child is often the one that is exactly wrong.”
What is established—and what remains unknown?
