Selena Gomez’s biological parents are Mandy Teefey and Ricardo Joel “Rick” Gomez. Both were 16 when Selena was born in Grand Prairie, Texas, in 1992, and Vogue reports that they separated when she was five. The reporting cited here describes a separation, not a legal divorce, so this article uses that wording throughout.

Who her parents are

Mandy Teefey

Mandy Teefey is Selena’s mother and the parent who has appeared most often in Selena’s public accounts of her childhood. In a 2021 Vogue profile, Selena recalled that her mother was always working to make her happy, even when the family had little money. Vogue reports that after the separation, Mandy worked at Starbucks, Dave & Buster’s, and a modeling agency while raising her daughter. ELLE’s 2015 profile adds that she sometimes held three jobs and also acted in local productions.

Mandy later became publicly visible through work connected to her daughter. She is named as a co-founder of Wondermind, a mental-health venture, and she discussed in a PBS interview published June 17, 2022, how media could encourage conversations between parents and children about mental health. That interview documents a collaboration at that point in time. It does not establish how the family relates today, or whether the venture is still operating in the same form.

Rick Gomez

Ricardo Joel Gomez is Selena’s father. The public record on him is thinner than on her mother. Vogue describes his family as Mexican-American, and Selena has told that part of the story herself. In a first-person essay for TIME dated October 1, 2019, she wrote:

  • Great work about a great personality of our times

“In the 1970s, my aunt crossed the border from Mexico to the United States hidden in the back of a truck. My grandparents followed, and my father was born in Texas soon after.”

That passage is Selena’s account of her family’s history. It is not an independent verification of each relative’s immigration record, and it should be attributed to her and to TIME when quoted. The reporting cited here does not describe Rick’s career, his household, or his current relationship with his daughter, so this article does not fill those gaps.

Timeline of the early years

The main dated facts come from two profiles and one essay. Ages and dates are as reported by those sources; they are not drawn from court or public records.

Naming and cultural context

Vogue reports that Selena was named after Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, whose music both parents loved. That detail explains a family influence on her name, but it does not say anything more about her parents’ roles in her career, so it is best read as background rather than as a biographical claim about them.

Selena’s connection to her Mexican-American heritage has been a recurring theme in her later work. The Los Angeles Times covered her embrace of that heritage on the album Revelación in a March 11, 2021 article, which is a useful companion source for readers interested in how she frames her family history publicly.

Stepfamily: a separate question

Some searches pair Mandy Teefey with a stepfather, Brian Teefey. A stepfather is a different relationship from a biological parent, and the sources cited here do not describe his role in detail. This article does not treat him as Selena’s father, and it does not substitute him for Rick Gomez.

What the reporting establishes and what it does not

  • Established: Mandy Teefey and Rick Gomez are Selena’s biological parents; both were 16 at her birth; the parents separated when she was five.
  • Attributed to Selena: the family’s migration history and the account of her mother’s sacrifices come from Selena’s own descriptions.
  • Not established in the reporting cited here: an exact divorce date, the current relationship between Selena and either parent, and the present status of Wondermind.

For readers who want more on Selena’s own account, the Vogue profile from April 2021 and the TIME essay from October 1, 2019 are the most direct primary sources. For a longer book-length treatment, Macmillan’s publisher page for Hispanic Star: Selena Gomez describes a biography that covers her parents. That book is not written by either parent.
