Simon Fisher-Becker played the Fat Friar, Hufflepuff’s ghost, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone—released in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The character’s significance is less about changing the plot than about embodying Hufflepuff’s warmth and acceptance.
Who is the Fat Friar?
The Fat Friar is the ghost associated with Hufflepuff at Hogwarts. The official Harry Potter character file describes him as a jolly spirit in clerical clothes and says he “embodied the Hufflepuff qualities of kindness, acceptance and generosity of spirit.”
Why is the Fat Friar significant?
A portrait of Hufflepuff values
The character file’s description makes the Friar more than a background ghost: it explicitly links his personality to Hufflepuff’s kindness, acceptance, and generosity. His friendliness offers a small, clear illustration of the house’s welcoming qualities.
His sympathy for Peeves
The official file also identifies the Fat Friar as one of the few Hogwarts residents who sympathizes with Peeves. That detail reinforces his nonjudgmental character. It is a thematic distinction, not evidence that he drives the story’s central events.

Which Harry Potter films feature the character?
The official character file lists the Fat Friar’s appearances in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. That is a character-level appearance list; it does not by itself establish how much screen time Fisher-Becker had in either film.
IMDb’s role-credit page credits Fisher-Becker as the Fat Friar in the first film, titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States. The available credit establishes his role, but does not quantify his scenes.
