Public reporting points to several people in Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales’s family and social circle, but it does not verify ten close relationships or ten estrangements. The clearest examples are Kate’s supportive siblings, William’s cousins, and a small number of friends. William and Prince Harry’s relationship is the best-documented strain; for most other royals, the evidence is too thin to call them distant.
What the evidence can—and cannot—show
Family ties, attending the same event, and private closeness are different things. A public appearance can establish that people were together; it cannot by itself show how intimate or supportive their relationship is. The list below therefore separates attributable reporting and direct public support from evidence that shows only public association. There is no published statistic measuring how close royal relatives are, so the headline’s “10 and 10” is an editorial framing, not a verified count.
People reported as close or supportive
Pippa and James Middleton: Kate’s siblings
Kate’s sister Pippa and brother James are repeatedly described in reporting as close to her. After Kate’s cancer announcement in March 2024, James shared a message of support. Us Weekly reproduced his words: “Over the years, we have climbed many mountains together. As a family, we will climb this one with you too ⛰️❤️.” The post is direct public evidence of support from her brother, though descriptions of the siblings’ overall closeness remain reporting about a private family relationship. Us Weekly’s account of Kate’s relationship with her siblings.
Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips: William’s cousins
Zara and Peter, children of Princess Anne, are William’s maternal cousins. Both attended a Buckingham Palace garden party with William on May 21, 2024, alongside Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. That establishes a shared public appearance and places them in his family orbit; it does not independently establish the depth of their private relationship. Tatler’s report on the garden party.

#1 Best Overall
Mike Tindall: a cousin by marriage
Tatler characterizes Zara’s husband Mike as close to William and Catherine, citing their joint rugby-podcast appearance and Mike’s mention of a cousins’ WhatsApp group. The same report reproduces an anonymous source previously quoted by The Times calling the Tindalls “the glue” of their generation of royals. That is an unnamed source’s characterization, not an official assessment or a direct measure of private closeness. Tatler’s account of Mike Tindall’s relationship with the Waleses.
James Meade: William and Catherine’s friend
Us Weekly describes James Meade as one of the couple’s close friends and reports that William is best friends with him. Meade was a co-best man at their 2011 wedding, a concrete public role that gives context to the description. The claim about their private friendship is secondary reporting. Carole and Michael Middleton: Kate’s parents
Vanity Fair reports that Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael, are close to William and involved in their grandchildren’s lives, and that they supported the couple during Kate’s treatment. This is a reported account of family support, not a direct public statement from the Middletons. Vanity Fair’s report on the Middletons’ support.
Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie: public association, not a proven ranking
Beatrice and Eugenie attended the May 2024 Buckingham Palace garden party with William. Tatler described the occasion as a display of friendship, but attendance alone cannot establish how close they are in private. The available evidence supports including them in a public family gathering, not assigning them a place on a definitive closeness scale. Tatler’s report on the garden party.

The relationship most often reported as strained: William and Harry
Harper’s Bazaar reports that the brothers’ relationship deteriorated after Harry and Meghan stepped back from senior royal roles in 2020 and after Harry published his memoir, Spare, in 2023. The magazine also cites royal biographer Russell Myers on Catherine’s reported efforts to preserve the brothers’ bond. Myers said she saw it as her duty to keep them “on the same team,” as did their senior aides. This is Myers’s account of her role, not a direct statement from Catherine or independent verification of private conversations. Harper’s Bazaar’s account of the reported rift.
There have also been public family occasions after the period of deterioration. Harper’s Bazaar reported that William and Harry attended Lord Robert Fellowes’s funeral in July 2024. A shared appearance does not establish that the underlying relationship had been repaired.
For dated context, an Associated Press succession explainer published February 6, 2024, placed William first, followed by George, Charlotte, Louis, and Harry, and noted that Harry had relinquished royal duties while retaining his place in succession at that time. Succession position and working-royal status are institutional matters, not evidence of personal closeness. Associated Press’s February 2024 succession explainer.

The reviewed reporting does not establish a defensible list of ten royals from whom William and Catherine are personally distant. In particular, a lack of recent joint photographs or public appearances is not proof of estrangement. The sound conclusion is narrower: William and Harry have a widely reported strain, while the evidence does not support labeling nine other royal relationships as distant.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond has commented generally on the wider family effects of a rift, saying, “When two people in a family fall out, it makes life very difficult not only for them, but for the rest of the family, too.” That is Bond’s general observation, not a statement about a specific royal’s private experience.
