10 of Ash’s Strongest Pokémon He Rarely Uses Now

Ash’s strongest reserves are not all unused: official recaps show Charizard and Snorlax in a Johto League battle and Sceptile in a later matchup. Here are ten powerful Pokémon from his wider roster, with an important caveat about ranking them.

Ash has used many of his strongest Pokémon again after leaving them behind, so “never uses” is too absolute. Charizard and Snorlax battled in the Johto League, and Sceptile returned for a later matchup. The list below highlights ten powerful Pokémon from Ash’s wider roster that have often been absent from his active team. It is an editorial ranking, not an official power list: the Pokémon anime has no canonical ranking of Ash’s Pokémon.

How to read this ranking

Ash’s lineup changes from one series and journey to the next. A Pokémon staying at Professor Oak’s lab is not the same as being forgotten, and an impressive battle does not establish that one Pokémon is universally stronger than another. This ranking weighs battle stakes, demonstrated performance, and the limits of the available evidence; it does not assign win rates or numeric power scores.

Official episode summaries confirm several of the examples below, but they do not document a complete top ten. For entries without a linked episode-level feat in the official summaries cited here, the ranking should be read as a selection of prominent, powerful reserves—not a verified ordering against every Pokémon Ash has caught.

The ten strongest Pokémon Ash rarely uses now

1. Charizard

Charizard is one of Ash’s most recognizable heavy hitters, but the Johto League recap also shows why “never uses” does not fit. Ash saves it for the end of his Silver Conference match against Harrison. Harrison has already knocked out Totodile, Snorlax, and Noctowl; the recap describes the final Charizard-versus-Blaziken battle as uncertain. That summary establishes the high-stakes matchup, not its winner. The Pokémon Company’s “Playing with Fire!” recap documents the appearance.

2. Snorlax

Snorlax also fights Harrison at the Silver Conference, where the recap says Harrison knocks it out. That is still a major tournament appearance against a capable opponent, but it is not evidence of an overall ranking or a victory. Its inclusion reflects demonstrated use in a high-stakes battle, not a claim that it outclasses Ash’s other reserves. The official recap names Snorlax among the Pokémon Harrison defeats.

3. Sceptile

Sceptile’s speed and power make it a standout reserve, and it did return for a later battle. In “Curbing the Crimson Tide,” Ash calls on Sceptile to keep up with a fast Scizor. The recap verifies the matchup and Sceptile’s role; it does not provide a career-wide comparison or a ranking.

4. Krookodile

Krookodile is a formidable member of Ash’s Unova team, but the official recap cited here does not document a feat by Ash’s Krookodile. It concerns Nanu’s Krookodile instead: in “Guiding an Awakening,” Lycanroc defeats Nanu’s Pokémon during a grand trial. That is an opponent appearance, not evidence that Ash’s Krookodile won that battle. The distinction matters when comparing Ash’s reserves.

5. Lycanroc

Lycanroc belongs to Ash’s later championship-era team, rather than the older reserves most often associated with his earlier journeys. In the final battle of the first Alola Pokémon League, Ash’s Lycanroc wins and Ash becomes champion. The Pokémon Company’s “Enter the Champion!” recap records the championship outcome. That achievement is strong evidence of performance in that tournament, but it should not be treated as a direct ranking against Pokémon from other eras.

6. Infernape

Infernape is a notable powerhouse from Ash’s Sinnoh journey and a natural candidate for a list of his strongest reserves. Its placement here is editorial rather than a claim established by the official recaps linked in this article; no numeric record or cross-series ranking is available from those sources.

7. Greninja

Greninja is another prominent member of Ash’s later traveling teams. Its significance comes from its role in a later chapter of Ash’s story, but this ranking does not infer a universal power score from its evolution, form, or popularity.

8. Heracross

Heracross is a strong early reserve that Ash did not keep in his traveling party throughout later journeys. Its inclusion reflects the depth of Ash’s roster, not a claim that it has a better verified record than every Pokémon above it.

9. Glalie

Glalie is among Ash’s less frequently revisited Pokémon from the Hoenn era. As with several entries here, the linked official episode summaries do not establish a comparative ranking for it; its position is an editorial assessment, not an official verdict.

10. Gible

Gible rounds out the list as a memorable reserve from Ash’s Sinnoh team. It is included as a powerful and distinctive member of his wider roster, while its precise standing against Ash’s other Pokémon remains unranked by any official source cited here.

Why Ash’s older Pokémon are often off the active team

Ash’s active lineup changes as he begins new journeys. In “The Dream Continues!”, he is eager to see the Pokémon at Professor Oak’s lab and thanks his Unova Pokémon and Charizard for their work before heading to Kalos. That recap supports a rotation between traveling teams and Pokémon left at the lab—not the idea that he never uses his reserves. Read the official episode summary.

The anime follows Ash’s changing adventures rather than maintaining one permanent battle roster. A Pokémon’s absence from a later series therefore says little by itself about its ability. Its demonstrated feats, the opponent, and the stakes of the battle are more useful evidence than an assumption that a reserve would win simply because it is powerful.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us

  • Some reserves do return. Charizard and Snorlax appear in Ash’s Silver Conference match, and Sceptile is called into a later battle.
  • Episode summaries are not a strength index. They establish selected matchups and outcomes, not a complete record or canonical ranking across Ash’s career.
  • Era matters. Lycanroc’s Alola League championship feat belongs to a different point in Ash’s story from the Johto and Hoenn examples.
  • One battle is not a universal score. Opponent strength, matchup, team context, and tournament stakes all shape what a result demonstrates.
