Houston had checked into the Beverly Hilton on February 6, 2012, ahead of the Grammy Awards and a pre-Grammy event at the hotel. Five days later, on the afternoon of February 11, her personal assistant was the last person known to see her alive.
According to the coroner investigator’s narrative, the assistant saw Houston at approximately 2:45 to 3:00 p.m. Houston reportedly complained of a sore throat, and the assistant suggested that she take a bath while preparing for the evening. The assistant then left the suite to run errands.

When the assistant returned at approximately 3:36 p.m., she used a key to enter the locked room. She found Houston face down and unresponsive in a bathtub filled with water. The assistant called Houston’s bodyguard, and the two removed Houston from the tub.
A 911 call was placed at approximately 3:43 p.m. Beverly Hills Fire Department paramedics arrived and attempted resuscitation. The coroner’s report records Houston’s death at approximately 3:55 p.m.
Investigators later measured the bathwater at about 93.5°F. That was a measurement made after the discovery, however, and should not be treated as the exact temperature of the water when Houston entered the bath.
The report also described prescription medications and other items in the suite. Investigators documented a small spoon containing a white crystal-like substance, rolled paper, and powder residue on or near a mirror. These observations formed part of the scene record, while the toxicology testing established the substances detected in Houston’s system. They do not, by themselves, establish what Houston was thinking or precisely what happened immediately before the drowning.
What the coroner determined
The Los Angeles County coroner’s concise release stated that the cause of death was accidental drowning. It identified atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. The official report is available in the coroner’s release, while the longer investigator and autopsy report provides the scene and timeline details.

That wording is medically important. A mechanism of death describes the immediate physical process that caused death—in this case, drowning. A contributing factor is a condition or substance that helped create the fatal circumstances but was not recorded as the primary mechanism. The coroner did not classify Houston’s death as a straightforward fatal cocaine overdose.
Atherosclerotic heart disease
Atherosclerosis involves the buildup of plaque in the arteries. The coroner listed atherosclerotic heart disease as a contributing condition. The report’s conclusion therefore included both a cardiovascular vulnerability and the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
Cocaine and the toxicology findings
Cocaine and its metabolites were detected, and the coroner stated that cocaine use contributed to the death. The presence of cocaine should not be converted into a claim that the official cause was an overdose. The documented conclusion was drowning, with cocaine use and heart disease contributing to the fatal event.

The toxicology report also detected marijuana, alprazolam—commonly known by the brand name Xanax—cyclobenzaprine—commonly known as Flexeril—and diphenhydramine, commonly known as Benadryl. The coroner stated that these substances were detected but did not contribute to the death.
What the investigation did—and did not—establish
Initial police statements reported no obvious signs of criminal intent. After reviewing the coroner’s findings, the Beverly Hills Police Department announced that it had found no evidence of foul play and closed the investigation as a noncriminal matter. Contemporary reporting on that conclusion is preserved by CBS News.

The official conclusion is the evidentiary basis for rejecting murder and cover-up theories as unsupported by the investigation. It does not mean that investigators reconstructed every second of the afternoon, identified every private thought Houston may have had, or proved details that the records do not contain.
The coroner’s report described minor external injuries and changes associated with resuscitation, but it found no fatal trauma. That distinction matters because later speculation often treats isolated scene details as if they were alternative medical conclusions. The documented medical and investigative record does not support that approach.

News coverage and public discussion sometimes reduce Houston’s death to the phrase “drug overdose.” That shorthand obscures the official finding. The coroner determined that she drowned, while cocaine use and atherosclerotic heart disease were contributing factors. Other detected substances were specifically reported as not contributing to the death.
A more accurate summary is: Whitney Houston died accidentally by drowning; the coroner identified atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. This formulation preserves the distinction made in the official record without minimizing the role that cocaine was determined to have played.
The public farewell at New Hope Baptist Church
Houston’s death came on the eve of the 54th Grammy Awards, which intensified the immediate media attention. The ceremony and surrounding events shifted quickly from celebration to mourning, but the public farewell also returned attention to her beginnings as a singer.

Her funeral was held on February 18, 2012, at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey—the church where Houston had sung as a child. The invitation-only service lasted nearly four hours and included tributes from Kevin Costner, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Clive Davis, Tyler Perry, and others.

The circumstances of Houston’s death are part of her history, but they are not the whole of it. She was one of the defining popular singers of her generation, known for a voice that combined technical control, power, emotional clarity, and an unusually broad mainstream reach.
Her recordings remain the most direct way to place the final news story in the context of the career it interrupted. The official artist site describes Whitney: The Greatest Hits as a double-album collection released in the United States on May 16, 2000, and lists its chart and certification history.
The most responsible account holds both facts together: Houston died in an accidental drowning that the coroner linked in part to heart disease and cocaine use, and she was also a major recording artist whose work continues to define an era of popular music. Her final moments should be described from the evidence, without invented details or sensationalism, and her legacy should not be reduced to the room in which she died.
