The White House response to Saturday Night Live’s Trump cold open was a dismissive remark, not a government action. Spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Entertainment Weekly by email that she had not watched the sketch and had “more entertaining things to do — like watch paint dry.”
What the White House said about SNL
Jackson’s statement to Entertainment Weekly was: “Reacting to this would require me to waste my time watching it. And like the millions of Americans who have tuned out from ‘SNL,’ I have more entertaining things to do — like watch paint dry.” The remark was reproduced by The Independent and Variety.
Jackson’s reference to “millions of Americans” was part of her rhetorical jab, not a verified audience figure. She said she had not watched the sketch; her response did not announce an investigation, enforcement step, or formal policy.
What happened in the October 4 cold open
The season 51 premiere of SNL aired October 4, 2025. The cold open began with Colin Jost parodying Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth before James Austin Johnson appeared as President Donald Trump and interrupted with “Late night TV!” The sketch also featured Mikey Day as FCC chair Brendan Carr. The Associated Press described the Hegseth opening and Trump interruption in its premiere report.

Johnson’s Trump character joked about the new season and cast, warned the show not to be too mean about him, and called Carr his FCC “attack dog.” Carr danced into the scene to Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me,” then corrected the pronunciation of his name. The sketch ended with the Trump character warning, “Remember: Daddy’s watching.” These were scripted lines and actions in a parody, not statements by Trump or Carr.

The cold open used the relationship between late-night television and political pressure as its comic target, with Carr cast as Trump’s “attack dog.” At the time, contemporaneous reporting also situated the sketch amid public conflict involving the Trump administration and late-night television, including Trump’s celebration of Stephen Colbert’s show cancellation and Jimmy Kimmel’s temporary suspension. That background does not establish that this SNL sketch prompted any government response.
