It supports a more careful account: one secondary report describes Brian Christopher’s death as an apparent suicide, Chris Benoit’s death was part of a double homicide-suicide, and a contemporaneous report about Ashley Massaro said her cause of death was not then known.
Why a list of ten is not supported
A count depends on what “WWE star” means. It could refer to someone under contract at the time of death, a former WWE performer, or anyone who appeared in WWE. Those are different groups, and the sources cited here do not establish a roster of ten people who meet one consistent definition and whose deaths were confirmed as suicides.
The reports also differ in what they establish. An early report may say a cause was unknown; an attributed description such as “apparent suicide” is not the same as a direct official determination. Treating those accounts as equivalent would overstate the evidence.
What the cited reports say about three cases
| Person | WWE relationship and reported details | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Brian Christopher | TheWrap reported his death at age 46 on July 30, 2018. | TheWrap characterized the death as an “apparent suicide,” attributing that description to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The characterization should remain attributed; the report cited here is not a direct official finding. |
| Chris Benoit | WWE issued an announcement on June 25, 2007, saying Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their son had been found dead. WWE’s statement the following day described a double homicide-suicide involving the three family members. | This was not a suicide-only case: WWE’s June 26 statement described the deaths of Nancy and their son before Benoit’s own death. WWE also cautioned against speculation about motive and drugs. Its initial announcement preceded the next-day account. |
| Ashley Massaro | ESPN reported on May 17, 2019, that the former WWE performer had died at age 39. | That contemporaneous report said the cause was unknown at the time. It does not establish a later cause determination, so it cannot by itself support including Massaro in a confirmed-suicide count. |
How to read early reports and company statements
WWE’s June 25, 2007 announcement about the Benoit family preceded its June 26 statement describing the deaths as a double homicide-suicide. WWE’s internal timeline from June 26 records the company’s communications and response while facts were emerging; it describes WWE’s actions, not an independent investigative finding. A July 17, 2007 WWE statement addressed toxicology, but toxicology information should not be treated as proof of motive.

The same distinction applies to later reporting on other deaths. ESPN’s May 17, 2019 Massaro report is useful for what was known when it was published, not for a later determination it did not report. TheWrap’s 2018 account of Christopher’s death preserves an attribution to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter rather than citing a direct official determination.

These individual accounts do not establish a suicide rate among WWE performers, a trend over time, or a cause linking wrestling, brain injury, medication, or company practices to any individual death. The cited sources are statements and case reports, not a systematic study or a verified census. Any broader conclusion would require consistently defined inclusion criteria and reliable case-by-case documentation.
