The 47th Kennedy Center Honors class included filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, the Grateful Dead and blues-rock artist Bonnie Raitt, alongside jazz musician Arturo Sandoval and The Apollo. The honorees were recognized for lifetime artistic achievements. The ceremony took place in Washington, D.C., on December 8, 2024; CBS scheduled its telecast for December 22.
Who were the 2024 Kennedy Center honorees?
The Kennedy Center named five recipients in its 47th class, recognizing distinct contributions across film, music and American performing arts:
| Honoree | Field or identity | Recognition |
|---|---|---|
| Francis Ford Coppola | Director and filmmaker | Lifetime artistic achievement |
| Grateful Dead | Rock band | Lifetime artistic achievement |
| Bonnie Raitt | Blues-rock singer-songwriter and guitarist | Lifetime artistic achievement |
| Arturo Sandoval | Jazz trumpeter, pianist and composer | Lifetime artistic achievement |
| The Apollo | American performing-arts institution | Special Honor |
The Kennedy Center announcement identified the Grateful Dead honorees as Mickey Hart, Billy Kreutzmann, the late Phil Lesh and Bobby Weir.
Why did the Kennedy Center honor the Grateful Dead?
The Center selected the band as part of a class honored for lifetime artistic achievements, describing the Grateful Dead as a rock band. The announcement establishes the basis at that level; it does not provide a separate, detailed award rationale for the band or a ranked explanation of its influence.

What happened at the ceremony?

These are details of the event, rather than the Kennedy Center’s formal rationale for selecting the honorees.
CBS/AP described The Apollo’s selection as the Kennedy Center’s first Honor for a specific performance venue. The Apollo marked its 90th anniversary in 2024, according to the theater’s event listing.
