Four performers carry the airport security plot in Carry-On.
Who is at the center of the security crisis
Taron Egerton is the performer whose character is directly tied to the airport security breach. He plays Ethan Kopek, a TSA officer who is pressured into letting a dangerous item pass through screening. Jason Bateman plays the Traveler, the mysterious passenger who forces him to do it. Sofia Carson and Danielle Deadwyler are the other two performers whose roles connect to the threat, though in different ways.

The four key roles
Each of these four actors occupies a distinct position in the story. The table below separates how each character relates to the screening crisis, to Ethan, and to the investigation.
| Performer | Character | Role in the screening crisis | Relationship to Ethan | Investigative role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taron Egerton | Ethan Kopek, TSA officer | Works airport security and is pressured to let the item through | Central character | Tries to alert law enforcement while being monitored |
| Jason Bateman | The Traveler | Directs the coercion from outside the screening lane | Antagonist who blackmails Ethan | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Sofia Carson | Nora | Not a screening officer; her safety is the leverage used against Ethan | His pregnant girlfriend | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Danielle Deadwyler | Elena Cole, LAPD officer | Not a screening officer; works a related threat through the police | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Investigates the connected threat for the LAPD |
Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek
Egerton is the film’s lead and the only one of the four who works inside the airport checkpoint. Ethan is a young TSA agent who is blackmailed into letting a dangerous package through security and onto a Christmas flight. Netflix’s official pages differ on the day: the title page refers to Christmas Eve, while an earlier About Netflix announcement says Christmas Day. Both describe the same premise.

Jason Bateman as the Traveler
Bateman plays the antagonist, a passenger who never needs to be at the checkpoint to exert control. His character uses Nora’s situation to force Ethan’s cooperation. Netflix’s Tudum ending explainer, which includes comments from director Jaume Collet-Serra on the final scene, centers on the Traveler and Ethan’s attempts to escape the pressure.
Sofia Carson as Nora
Carson plays Nora, Ethan’s pregnant girlfriend. She is not a security officer. Her role is that of personal leverage: the Traveler threatens her to keep Ethan compliant. Netflix’s Tudum cast guide identifies her as Ethan’s partner.

- The disk has English audio.
Danielle Deadwyler as Elena Cole
Deadwyler plays LAPD officer Elena Cole. Cole’s work is police investigation, not airport screening, so she belongs to the separate track of the plot that follows a related threat. Netflix’s Tudum ending explainer identifies the role, and Amblin’s film page lists Deadwyler among the stars.
Other names on the cast list
Netflix’s title page also lists Theo Rossi, Logan Marshall-Green, Dean Norris, Sinqua Walls, Gil Perez-Abraham and Tonatiuh. The sources reviewed for this article do not establish their roles in the security plot, so they are not counted among the performers driving the airport crisis.
