In an October 2021 article, Maxwell Stone, creative director of Steven Stone, valued Diana’s ring at about £390,000 and Camilla’s at about £212,500 at the market prices of that time. These are expert estimates, not documented sale prices, insurance appraisals or independently verified valuations. The search for an official valuation of either ring turned up no regulator, court or formal document, so the ranking rests on one expert’s method and date.
The two rings at a glance
Both rings were engagement rings from Prince Charles, but they were made and chosen in very different eras. Charles proposed to Diana in 1981 and to Camilla in 2005. The rings differ in almost every physical detail, which is why a simple price comparison only tells part of the story.

Diana’s ring
British Vogue describes an 18-carat white-gold ring built around a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire, with diamonds around it. Diana chose the design from a selection presented by the Crown jewellers, and it was produced by Garrard. The Knot gives the number of surrounding diamonds as 14 round stones. Maxwell Stone’s view was that the design broke with royal tradition at the time: “Diana’s sapphire ring is bold and even broke royal tradition at the time.”
Camilla’s ring
Vanity Fair’s 2026 description is of an Art Deco ring with a five-carat emerald-cut diamond and diamond baguettes. The ring was once owned by the Queen Mother. Steven Stone’s 2021 account says it was given to her in 1929 and passed down through the family. Its family history is part of the ring’s reported story, but it does not by itself determine what the ring is worth on the market.

What the published prices actually measure
The figures circulating for these rings answer different questions. Some estimate what the rings would fetch now, some estimate what they originally cost, and some adjust an old price for inflation. Putting them side by side without labels produces misleading comparisons.

The 2021 comparison
The only pair of figures that directly compares the two rings comes from Maxwell Stone in October 2021. Both values come from the same expert in the same article, which makes them the most comparable numbers available. They are still jeweller estimates made at one point in time, and the article does not publish the method behind them.

The disputed original price of Diana’s ring
British Vogue’s 2020 figure of £28,500 and Greg Kwiat’s account of £47,000 ($60,000) at purchase cannot both be the price paid. They are different sources, in different currencies, with different dates and no shared method. Neither should be presented as the definitive original cost. A 1981 United Press International item, which surfaced in search results and could not be checked against the original page, reported that Charles was said to have spent $57,000 on the ring. Treat that figure as an unverified report.
Why the answer depends on what you ask
If the question is which ring would sell for more today, the 2021 estimates point to Diana’s ring, but they are five years old and produced by one expert. If the question is what each ring cost when it was bought, the sources disagree and no single answer is supported. If the question is which ring is more valuable as a historical object, the answer depends on the value you place on provenance, design and royal association, and no published source measures that.

The stones also make a direct price-per-carat comparison unreliable. A sapphire and an emerald-cut diamond are different gems, with different markets and different pricing. The reported weights, 12 carats for Diana’s sapphire and five carats for Camilla’s diamond, do not make the two stones interchangeable.

British Vogue reported in 2010 that Clarence House confirmed Prince William had given Catherine, Princess of Wales, the ring his mother had worn. That transfer is part of the ring’s history, but it is separate from the question of which ring was worth more.

How to cite these figures
- Name the source and date for each figure, for example “Maxwell Stone of Steven Stone estimated in October 2021 that Diana’s ring was worth about £390,000.”
- Do not describe any of the figures as a verified sale price or an official appraisal.
- Keep the original purchase estimates separate from current-market estimates, and do not convert the dollar figures into pounds.
- Do not present the £123,000 inflation-adjusted figure as a current valuation.
