Spotify uses the least mobile data among the clearly documented settings compared here: its Low option is an approximately 24-kbps equivalent, or about 10.8 MB per hour of audio. YouTube Music’s Low setting is the next clearly documented option at up to 48 kbps (about 21.6 MB per hour). The decisive factor is the quality setting—not the brand—and video or lossless playback can overwhelm either estimate.
For a limited plan, set cellular streaming to Low, disable lossless and video, and download regular playlists over Wi‑Fi. The figures below are audio-payload estimates, not carrier-billing guarantees.
How music-streaming data usage is calculated
Bitrate is the main driver. A practical estimate is:
Approximate megabytes per hour = bitrate in kbps × 0.45

This describes the audio payload. Album art, lyrics, telemetry, advertising, buffering, replays, podcasts and other app traffic can raise the total. Services may use variable or adaptive delivery, so labels such as “up to” and “approximately” are not promises of a constant bitrate. Codec efficiency also matters: a 256-kbps Opus stream and a 256-kbps AAC stream have the same nominal data rate but should not automatically be treated as identical in perceived quality.
| Bitrate | Approximate audio data per hour | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 24 kbps | 10.8 MB | Spotify Low (approximate equivalent) |
| 48 kbps | 21.6 MB | YouTube Music Low (up to) |
| 96 kbps | 43.2 MB | Spotify Normal (approximate) |
| 128 kbps | 57.6 MB | YouTube Music Normal (up to) |
| 160 kbps | 72 MB | Spotify High (approximate) |
| 256 kbps | 115.2 MB | YouTube Music High (up to) |
| 320 kbps | 144 MB | Spotify Very High (approximate); TIDAL Low up to this rate |
| 850 kbps | 382.5 MB | Amazon Music HD average figure |
| 1,411 kbps | 634.95 MB | CD-quality lossless estimate |
| 9,216 kbps | 4,147.2 MB | Maximum hi-res example cited for Amazon/TIDAL formats |
At one hour per day for 30 days, the same convention produces approximately 324 MB at 24 kbps, 648 MB at 48 kbps, 1.30 GB at 96 kbps, 1.73 GB at 128 kbps, 2.16 GB at 160 kbps, 3.46 GB at 256 kbps, 4.32 GB at 320 kbps and about 19 GB at CD-quality lossless. These are planning estimates; your phone’s counter can be higher.
Which service uses the least data?
| Service | Lowest documented setting | Approximate audio data/hour | High or lossless warning | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spotify | Low, approximately 24 kbps | 10.8 MB | Very High is approximately 320 kbps; Premium lossless can be far higher | Minimum-data listening |
| YouTube Music | Low, up to 48 kbps | 21.6 MB | High is up to 256 kbps; video playback adds substantial data | Low-data listening with YouTube’s catalog |
| Apple Music | Setting-dependent | Not stated | Lossless and hi-res lossless use significantly more data | Apple-device users who can separate cellular and Wi‑Fi quality |
| Amazon Music | Setting-dependent for compressed audio | Not stated | HD averages about 850 kbps; Ultra HD can reach about 12 MB per minute | High-fidelity listening, preferably on Wi‑Fi |
| TIDAL | Low, up to 320 kbps | Up to 144 MB | High and Max may use FLAC or hi-res FLAC | Listeners prioritizing fidelity over data |

Spotify versus YouTube Music for low-data listening
Spotify
Spotify lists approximately 24 kbps for Low, 96 kbps for Normal, 160 kbps for High and 320 kbps for Very High on Premium. These are approximate equivalents rather than a guarantee that every second arrives at a fixed rate. Spotify’s Data Saver lowers audio quality and reduces some visual content. Premium subscribers can download albums and playlists for offline playback; Spotify now also supports lossless streaming on compatible devices and catalog tracks, which should be reserved for Wi‑Fi when data matters.

In the app, open your profile picture, choose Settings and privacy, then find Audio Quality on iOS or Media Quality on Android. Set Cellular/mobile streaming to Low, leave Wi‑Fi quality higher if desired, and set download quality separately. Existing downloads may need to be deleted and recreated at the new quality.
YouTube Music
YouTube Music lists Low at up to 48 kbps, Normal at up to 128 kbps and High at up to 256 kbps for AAC or Opus. It provides Stream via Wi‑Fi only and audio-only playback for supported music and podcast content. The service’s wider video ecosystem makes accidental video playback the key risk.
Open your profile picture, select Settings, then the playback or data-saving controls (the exact label varies by platform version). Set Audio quality on mobile network to Low or Normal, enable Wi‑Fi-only streaming when appropriate, and use audio-only mode. Under Download & storage → Audio quality, choose Low, Normal or High for offline files. Existing downloads retain their previous quality and must be downloaded again after you change this setting.
Apple Music, Amazon Music and TIDAL
Apple Music
Apple Music lets you configure cellular streaming, Wi‑Fi streaming and downloads independently. On current iPhone layouts, open Settings → Apps → Music → Audio Quality; older iOS versions may show Settings → Music. Disable lossless and hi-res lossless over cellular if conserving data. Apple does not provide one universal bitrate for every compressed setting in the cited guide, so a single hourly number would be misleading. Spatial Audio, lossless and hi-res lossless are separate use cases, not interchangeable quality labels.

Amazon Music
Amazon says HD is 16-bit audio averaging about 850 kbps—roughly 382.5 MB per hour by the calculation above. Its FAQ says Ultra HD can reach approximately 12 MB per minute at the highest sample rates. Bit depth, sample rate, codec and network conditions affect the delivered amount. Amazon Music is therefore a poor choice for a strict cellular budget when HD or Ultra HD is enabled.
TIDAL
TIDAL’s Low category is compressed AAC up to 320 kbps, already much heavier than Spotify Low or YouTube Music Low. High and Max can provide FLAC or hi-res FLAC depending on the track and setting. Set mobile quality at Settings → Audio & Playback → Mobile data streaming. If you change download quality, delete and re-download saved content when necessary.

Music videos
Video data can dwarf the audio calculation. Use YouTube Music’s audio-only mode, Spotify’s music-only playback where available, Wi‑Fi-only streaming or offline downloads. Audio-only mode does not make every YouTube item audio-only; availability varies by content and membership.
Lossless and hi-res audio
Lossless preserves more of the source signal but requires a much larger stream. Whether you hear an improvement depends on headphones or speakers, Bluetooth codec, mastering, listening environment and hearing. A higher number is technical fidelity, not an automatic guarantee of audible benefit.

Background activity and rebuffering
Artwork, lyrics, previews, telemetry, advertisements, podcasts and video podcasts can use different amounts of data. Poor reception may cause rebuffering or repeated transfers. Bluetooth does not reduce cellular usage; it only links the phone to headphones.
Settings that fit common monthly allowances
- About 500 MB: Spotify Low allows roughly 46 hours under the audio-only estimate. Download frequently played music over Wi‑Fi and block cellular video.
- 1–2 GB: Spotify Normal is about 1.30 GB for one hour daily over 30 days; YouTube Music Low is about 648 MB for that schedule. Choose based on the sound quality you accept.
- 5 GB: Compressed high-quality listening is practical for moderate use, but control lossless, hi-res and video.
- Unlimited data: Select the service and quality that suit your ecosystem and equipment; lossless becomes a preference rather than a data-risk decision.
To check reality, run an uninterrupted one-hour audio-only session, then compare the app’s usage with your phone’s cellular-data counter. Other apps, operating-system traffic and carrier accounting can affect the result.
Choosing by priority
- Lowest possible usage: Spotify Low, with Data Saver enabled.
- You already have YouTube Premium: YouTube Music Low plus audio-only or Wi‑Fi-only streaming.
- Apple hardware and lossless listening: Apple Music, with lossless restricted to Wi‑Fi or downloads.
- High-fidelity home listening: Amazon Music or TIDAL, using Wi‑Fi and offline downloads for cellular travel.
Final verdict
Among the documented settings compared here, Spotify Low is the lowest-data choice at approximately 10.8 MB per hour. YouTube Music Low is a useful alternative at up to 21.6 MB per hour, provided you prevent video playback. At Normal settings Spotify remains lower on the published figures than YouTube Music; at the top end, both lossless and hi-res options can consume hundreds of megabytes per hour or more. The safest strategy for any service is to set cellular quality deliberately, keep video and lossless off mobile data, and download regular listening over Wi‑Fi.
