The quickest way to find the right fix is to check whether one episode, Crunchyroll alone, or several Roku apps are failing. Then work from a simple restart and update toward reinstalling the app or checking your account.
Menu wording can differ between Roku players, Roku TVs, and software releases. The steps below use Roku’s current support paths where available; if a menu label is different on your device, choose its equivalent.
First find out what is failing
Before changing settings, run these checks. They help distinguish a title problem from a Crunchyroll app, account, network, or Roku issue.
- Try another Crunchyroll show or episode.
- Open another Roku app, such as The Roku Channel.
- Try Crunchyroll on a phone or computer using the same account and, if possible, the same home network.
- Note whether Crunchyroll will not launch at all, or whether it opens but cannot play video.
| What you find | What it suggests | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| Only one episode or title fails | A title-, episode-, subtitle-, or content-specific problem is more likely than a Roku-wide fault. | Try another episode and test the affected one on another device. |
| Crunchyroll fails but other Roku apps work | Focus on the Crunchyroll app, its sign-in state, your account, or a Crunchyroll service issue. | Restart and update the app, then check sign-in and service notices. |
| Several Roku apps fail | The Roku connection, router, internet service, or Roku system may be involved. | Run Roku’s connection check and restart the router and Roku. |
| Crunchyroll works on another device but not Roku | The Roku app, Roku software, device compatibility, or Roku-specific sign-in state is a stronger suspect. | Update, restart, and, if needed, reinstall the Roku app. |
| Crunchyroll fails on multiple devices | An account or service-side problem is possible. | Check Crunchyroll’s support communications before repeatedly reinstalling the Roku app. |
Roku recommends checking whether a playback problem affects one title or multiple titles and consulting the streaming provider when a service interruption may be involved. See Roku’s playback troubleshooting guide.

Try the least disruptive fixes first
- Return to the Roku home screen, reopen Crunchyroll, and test a title.
- Highlight Crunchyroll on the home screen, press the Star/asterisk button, and use a restart or update option if one appears.
- Confirm the Roku is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use.
- If other streaming apps are also failing, restart the router as well as the Roku.
Skip unofficial button sequences and “cache cleaner” advice. Roku does not generally provide a user-facing per-app cache-clearing menu like some other TV platforms; restarting or reinstalling is the clearer Roku-specific route.
Restart the Crunchyroll app
- Press Home.
- Highlight Crunchyroll.
- Press the Star/asterisk button on the Roku remote.
- Select Restart, if that option is shown.
- Open Crunchyroll again and test a title.
If you do not see Restart, return to Home and continue with a full Roku system restart, then check for app updates. Roku describes this app-level option in its streaming-app troubleshooting guidance.
Restart the Roku device
A system restart is different from a factory reset: it should not remove installed apps or unlink your Roku account.

- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Press Home.
- Open Settings → System.
- If your device has a Power submenu, open Power → System restart. On other devices, choose System restart directly.
- After the Roku starts again, reopen Crunchyroll and test playback.
If the menu restart is unavailable or does not work, unplug the Roku from power, wait about 10 seconds, reconnect it directly to power, and try again. Roku recommends this as a troubleshooting option for playback problems; see its playback guidance.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the Roku connection and home network
- Press Home, then open Settings → Network → About to review the connection.
- If needed, select Set up connection to reconnect, or use Check connection where that option is available in the network menus.
- Test another streaming app. If it also fails, reduce simultaneous high-bandwidth activity and restart the router.
- To restart the router, unplug it for about 10 seconds, reconnect it to power, and wait for it to reconnect before testing Crunchyroll again.
- If possible, test the Roku closer to the router or use Ethernet if your Roku model supports it.
These network paths and the router restart procedure are documented in Roku’s playback troubleshooting guide. A connection can fail because of intermittent Wi-Fi, router, DNS, or packet-loss problems; buffering does not automatically prove that your internet plan is too slow. No single speed threshold applies to every title, quality level, and network condition.
Update Crunchyroll and Roku software
Check for a Crunchyroll app update
- Press Home and highlight Crunchyroll.
- Press the Star/asterisk button.
- Choose Check for updates, if shown, and install any available update.
- Reopen Crunchyroll and test playback.
Check for a Roku system update
- Open Settings → System → Software update.
- Select Check now.
- Let any update finish, then reopen Crunchyroll.
Roku recommends checking both app and system updates when a streaming app will not load or behaves unexpectedly. Exact labels may vary by device and software release, and the Roku needs an internet connection to check for updates. See Roku’s app-feature troubleshooting guidance and playback guidance. There is no reliable current Crunchyroll app version number established here, so use the Roku interface rather than relying on a version number from an old post.

Remove and reinstall Crunchyroll
If restarting and updating have not fixed a Crunchyroll-only problem, reinstalling can replace a damaged or incomplete app installation.
- Press Home and highlight Crunchyroll.
- Press the Star/asterisk button.
- Select Remove app or Remove channel, depending on the wording on your Roku, and confirm.
- Restart the Roku using Settings → System → System restart (or the Roku TV’s Settings → System → Power → System restart path if applicable).
- Open the Roku Streaming Store, search for Crunchyroll, and add or install it again.
- Sign in and test playback.
Restarting between removal and installation gives Roku a clean system state. Removing the app can clear local app state, such as a sign-in session or preferences. Account-linked information is different from local settings, so do not assume every preference will be preserved. Roku uses both removal labels in its troubleshooting material: playback help and app-feature help.
Fix sign-in, activation, and repeated logout problems
If your Roku offers code-based sign-in, Crunchyroll’s activation page explains how to use the displayed six-character code.

- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote

- Open Crunchyroll on Roku and choose its sign-in option.
- If offered, select Log in with Code or Activate with Code.
- On a phone or computer, open Crunchyroll’s official activation page and sign in to the account you intend to use.
- Enter the six-character code shown on the Roku, then return to the app and test playback.
If the code fails, generate a fresh one in the Roku app and make sure you are signing in to the intended account. If Crunchyroll repeatedly signs you out, sign out and back in, verify which account owns the subscription, and check the account’s device-management controls. Crunchyroll says those controls let users review signed-in devices and deactivate ones they do not recognize: Crunchyroll account-security guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check Premium access and the billing account
If the app opens and you can sign in but Premium titles remain locked, first confirm that the Crunchyroll account on Roku is the same one associated with the subscription. A subscription may be billed through Crunchyroll, Roku Pay, Apple, or Google Play, and the account used for billing may differ from the one currently signed in on the TV.
- If you subscribed through Roku Pay, review subscriptions through the Roku account and subscriptions area. Roku’s guidance for subscription or app availability problems is at What happened to my subscription?
- If you subscribed directly through Crunchyroll, Apple, or Google Play, check the subscription with that billing provider.
- Do not subscribe again until you confirm which account and platform currently hold the plan; doing so could create a duplicate charge.
Crunchyroll’s support documentation says upgrading a membership purchased through Roku Pay may require contacting Crunchyroll rather than changing it directly in Roku: Crunchyroll’s Roku Pay upgrade information. That is a billing-management issue, not a general fix for crashes or buffering.

Match the symptom to the next step
| Symptom | Prioritize |
|---|---|
| Crunchyroll will not open or returns to Home | Restart the app and Roku, check for app and system updates, then reinstall if other Roku apps work. |
| Black screen or immediate crash | Update Crunchyroll and Roku OS, restart the device, and reinstall if the issue is limited to Crunchyroll. |
| Video buffers or stops after starting | Run the Roku network check, test another app, reduce network load, and restart the router and Roku. Compare another title to identify a one-title problem. |
| Subtitles, audio, or autoplay behave differently than expected | Check playback settings inside Crunchyroll. Roku notes that app features are often controlled by the individual streaming service and may not be exposed on every device; see Roku’s feature guidance. |
If only one title is affected, do not factory-reset the Roku for that symptom. If a service interruption is confirmed through Crunchyroll’s own communications, wait for the provider to resolve it rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
If Crunchyroll is missing from the Roku Streaming Store
Crunchyroll lists Roku among supported media-streaming platforms, including on its activation page and its device-availability guide. That does not establish compatibility for every Roku model, region, or software release. If the app is absent, check that the Roku is linked to the account you expect and search the store from the device. Roku notes that multiple-account confusion can affect app or subscription availability; see its subscription and availability guidance. Do not assume an older model is supported without checking its compatibility.
When to contact Crunchyroll or Roku
- Contact Crunchyroll when only its app is failing, activation or sign-in does not work, Premium access is missing, or a title, playback feature, or caption problem is specific to Crunchyroll.
- Contact Roku when several apps fail, the Roku cannot connect to Wi-Fi, the Streaming Store will not open, system updates fail, the device repeatedly reboots, or the remote, power, or display is malfunctioning.
Roku directs users to the streaming service for app-specific sign-in, playback, and content issues, while broader device problems belong with Roku; see Roku’s troubleshooting guidance and Roku contact options.
When contacting support, include the exact error text or number, when it appears (launch, sign-in, title loading, or playback), Roku model and Roku OS version, Crunchyroll app version if shown, whether other apps work, and whether the same title plays on another device. A screenshot or short recording can help. Crunchyroll’s sign-in troubleshooting asks users to provide device/platform and exact error details: Crunchyroll sign-in help.
Use another device before replacing the Roku
If Roku still fails, test Crunchyroll on a phone, tablet, or computer you already own, or another supported device listed by Crunchyroll. Buying a replacement streamer is premature when the fault is limited to one app or can be fixed by reinstalling it. Consider replacement only after other Roku apps and the network have been checked, Crunchyroll works elsewhere, reinstalling and signing in again have failed, and the Roku itself shows broader system or compatibility problems.
